Why the far side of the moon? But the far side of the moon — it is not actually the dark side of the moon — is distinct from the near side. With a lunar far side sample, scientists can begin to probe why the two sides of the moon are so different. Because the same side of the moon always faces Earth, it is impossible to directly establish communications with the lunar far side. Chang’e-7, expected to launch in 2026, will search for water at the lunar south pole.

"Child care is core to enabling women to work," she said. She explained that if she stayed in her career, her entire post-tax pay would have gone to child care, and all of the child care providers in her area were waitlisted. I didn't really go through this, so how many people are really thinking child care is an issue? "If you want a strong economy, women have to participate and in order for that to happen, we need strong child care," she said. Raimondo noted that half of Americans live in a "child care desert," with not enough services available at a cost that is affordable.

Feeling older than you are? It could be how you sleep
  + stars: | 2024-03-26 | by ( Sandee Lamotte | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Not getting enough sleep may cause you to feel five to 10 years older than you really are, according to two new studies. A lack of energy and motivation can certainly contribute to feeling older while limiting a person’s ability to remain physically and socially active, both of which contribute to feeling young, Balter said. For every night of poor sleep during that time, people reported feeling about a quarter of a year older than their chronological age. “These findings support that sleep, a vital biological phenomenon, might hold the key to feeling young,” Balter and her colleagues wrote in the study. “If you suspect that your sleep deprivation is due to a sleep disorder such as insomnia or sleep apnea, it’s crucial to seek evaluation and treatment from a healthcare professional,” he said.

She has written a memoir about working for a secretive and wildly prestigious Wall Street hedge fund. Recruiters are one of the main gatekeepers for the hedge fund and private equity industries. I hadn't — but I had heard of Argon, a hedge fund that had long and widely been seen as financial royalty. A leading financial publication had called Carbon the world's hottest hedge fund. Another had named it one of the world's top-performing large hedge funds, ranking it among other hedge fund titans and their flagships, like Ray Dalio's Pure Alpha II and Ken Griffin's Citadel.

“Xist is a very long RNA, 17,000 nucleotides long, or letters, and it associates with approximately almost 100 proteins,” Chang said. Chang wondered whether the clumps of protein molecules that arise when Xist connects with the X chromosome were a trigger for autoimmune disease. The experiments weren’t designed to show whether Xist or the related proteins cause autoimmune disease in the animals. The samples from patients with autoimmune disease produced higher levels of autoantibodies in reaction to proteins associated with Xist, the researchers found. Plus, environmental factors play a big role in autoimmune disease.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Women are far more likely than men to get autoimmune diseases, when an out-of-whack immune system attacks their own bodies — and new research may finally explain why. One theory is that the X chromosome might be a culprit. The X chromosome is packed with hundreds of genes, far more than males’ much smaller Y chromosome. Every female cell must switch off one of its X chromosome copies, to avoid getting a toxic double dose of all those genes. “We think that’s really important, for Xist RNA to leak out of the cell to where the immune system gets to see it.

In the most affluent schools, widespread chronic absenteeism also increased: to 14 percent of schools, up from 3 percent before the pandemic. For example, in Ohio, chronic absenteeism spiked to 30 percent in the 2021-22 school year, from nearly 17 percent of students in 2018-19. In some states, like California and New Mexico, the rate of chronic absenteeism was still double what it was before the pandemic. Widespread absenteeism also affects school culture, hurting even the students with strong attendance. It has disrupted students’ relationships — with other students at school, and with teachers, who often are burned out and leaving their jobs at higher rates.

Chang is known as the godfather of the industry that has put Taiwan in the top ranks of high-tech manufacturing and personal electronic devices. Taiwan has participated in APEC since 1991 under the name Chinese Taipei. It began taking part just two years after the group's inception and the same year that China and the semi-autonomous Chinese city of Hong Kong joined. These acts of political intimidation have the potential to wear down the operational resiliency of the island's military equipment and personnel.

It was the restaurant where we first witnessed a frozen torchon of foie gras being shaved to make a mountain of salty pink snow. Where we had our first spoonful of panna cotta that tasted like the milk in the bottom of a bowl of cornflakes. Rational people began to blame their inability to score on nefarious bots and scalpers, a preview of things to come. Behind this was Mr. Chang’s hunch that the paraphernalia of fine dining — not just white tablecloths but maybe even tables themselves — had become clunky and dated. “Cook’s prices,” as Mr. Chang was heard to say.

The World Is Becoming More African

Old World Young Africa As the world grays, Africa blooms with youth. The World Is Becoming More African Part one of a series on how the youth boom is changing the continent, and beyond. But while a handful of African countries are poised to ride the demographic wave, others risk being swamped by it. In the West, racists and right-wing nationalists stoke fears of African population growth to justify hatred, or even violence. The age gap between geriatric leaders and restless youth is “a major source of tension” in many African countries, said Simon Mulongo, a former African Union diplomat from Uganda.

Tsai predicts that AI will one day help doctors analyze complicated genetic data — a hallmark of precision medicine. Together, AI imaging and genetic analysis may help doctors rapidly pinpoint a diagnosis and create a highly personalized treatment plan, thus improving a patient's care. AI and the potential for genetic analysisIn addition to medical imaging, AI could one day comb through large amounts of genetic information, a challenging task for researchers. A possible convergence in the clinicWang does not see combining AI imaging and AI genetic analysis at the doctor's office happening within the next couple of years. Chang/Zuma PressRegarding Joshua Ben Rosen’s “AI Can Do as Bad a Job as Your PR Department” (op-ed, Sept. 21): Human communication is mostly imperfect, even in well-thought-through text. With AI, by contrast, there is nothing to be read between the lines. That is worse than rhetorical nothingness.
