Honeywell shares are under pressure Thursday, despite the industrial conglomerate exceeding expectations for first-quarter sales and earnings. The culprits: Softer guidance for the current quarter and some uncertainty about a recovery in some of its key businesses. Honeywell Why we own it: Honeywell is a provider of industrial technology solutions to companies in various industries. Building automation was down year over year as growth in the longer-cycle solutions business was offset by continued weakness in the shorter-cycle products business. LOS ANGELES (AP) — U.S. aerospace company Stratolaunch conducted the first powered test flight of a new unmanned craft for hypersonic research on Saturday and called it a success. Hypersonic describes flights at speeds of at least Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound. The Talon, powered by a liquid-fuel rocket engine, ended its flight by descending into the ocean as planned. The company called the result a major milestone in the development of the United States' first privately funded, reusable hypersonic test capability. That project was canceled, and new owners then repurposed Stratolaunch for launches of reusable hypersonic research vehicles.

While earnings, profit margins, and cash flow came in slightly ahead of expectations, sales were light across the board. Segment margin , similar to an adjusted operating income margin, grew 64 basis points to 23.5%, slightly ahead of expectations and ahead of the high-end of management's previous forecast. Segment margin performance was largely better than expected, with the exception of Building Technologies, and cash flow generation came in solidly above expectations. Where they landed on guidance both in terms of sales and margin performance, and therefore earnings, hinges on the short-cycle recovery. Full-year segment margin guidance of 23.15% at the midpoint was higher than estimates.

The Bodily Indignities of the Space Life

But the space-based medical science needed to make that possible has been hindered by small sample sizes that aren’t representative of the general population. As less-rigorous medical screening allows more tourists to reach space, the chances increase significantly that someone will get hurt or have a health emergency there. And if we survived those perils, wouldn’t escalating pressure in our skulls kill us after a week or so? Initially, many space travelers puke, or at least feel motion-sick — space-adaptation syndrome, or S.A.S., is what such nausea, headache and vomiting are called outside our atmosphere. symptoms in the 1970s, when they heard Skylab astronauts talking about it with one another over a hot mic.

New York CNN —When war breaks out, defense companies tend to make money. That means aerospace and defense stocks tend to rise during geopolitical unrest. Defense stocks typically rise after military conflicts but soon lose those gains. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the iShares defense ETF surged by 5%, with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman’s shares jumping about 20%. Goldman Sachs announced third-quarter results on Tuesday morning, reporting earnings of $5.47 per share, which beat the $5.31 expected by analysts.

Wall Street analysts expect defense stocks will continue to move higher as a result of the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war making it less likely Congress will delay or curb the nation's defense budget. Defense stocks have underperformed as a group this year amid concerns that partisan divisions in Washington point to lower military spending. Notably, Bernstein analyst Douglas Harned doesn't expect the Israel-Hamas conflict will change the path of U.S. defense spending. He cited prior conflicts, such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year, that didn't end up boosting the defense budget.
