James Van Der Beek gave his first comments about the “shock” of learning he has colorectal cancer and the “trickiest thing” he’s faced since being diagnosed.
Rates of colorectal cancer in people under 55 like Van Der Beek have been increasing by 1% to 2% a year since the mid-1990s, according to the American Cancer Society.
“I’d always associated cancer with age and with unhealthy, sedentary lifestyles,” Van Der Beek told People.
Van Der Beek underwent a colonoscopy, which is when he learned he has cancer.
“The trickiest thing is there are so many unknowns with cancer,” Van Der Beek said.
