NEW YORK (AP) — The Biden Administration is easing its restrictions on banking giant Wells Fargo, saying the bank has sufficiently fixed its toxic culture after years of scandals. Millions of unauthorized accounts were opened, severely tarnishing the reputation of Wells Fargo, once among the most sterling in banking. The decision is a major victory for Wells' management and Charles Scharf, who took over as CEO in 2019. There remains in place a Federal Reserve consent order against Wells as well as a requirement by the Fed that Wells grow no bigger than its current size until it fixed its sales culture. The Fed did not immediately respond to comment, but the OCC's decision is likely to pressure the Fed to make its own decision regarding its restrictions on Wells.

Schem, a 21-year-old French-Israeli woman, is being held hostage by the militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The video released by Hamas on Monday is the first footage of any of the dozens of people held in the enclave. Schem’s mother told CNN on Monday that she believed her daughter’s resilience would help her survive. She is being held hostage by the group, which released a video of Schem on Monday.

Dec 20 (Reuters) - Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) agreed to pay $3.7 billion to settle charges from a U.S. consumer watchdog over widespread mismanagement of car loans, mortgages and bank accounts, the regulator said Tuesday. "Wells Fargo is a corporate recidivist that puts one-third of American households at risk of harm,” CFPB Director Rohit Chopra told journalists in a briefing. Shares of Wells Fargo were down less than 1% in late morning trading. Wells Fargo has faced multiple enforcement actions taken by the CFPB and other banking regulators for violations across the bank's business lines. Scharf became CEO in 2019, the fourth person to lead Wells Fargo since the scandal emerged.
