Hong Kong CNN —Samsung posted its fourth straight quarter of slumping profits on Wednesday, capping off a dismal year that also saw it lose its crown as the world’s top smartphone maker. Despite that, Samsung is optimistic about a resurgence in demand for mobile devices this year. The South Korean firm has acknowledged “lower smartphone sales” during the fourth quarter, though it noted a pickup in demand for high-end smartphones compared to the previous three months. This year, however, the market is expected to recover gradually, “despite various potential obstacles, including interest rate policies and geopolitical issues,” Samsung said in a statement Wednesday. The company managed to command higher prices for memory chips in the fourth quarter compared to the previous quarter, showing a slight “improved performance,” it added.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Samsung Electronics on Tuesday reported an annual 34% decline in operating profit for the last quarter as sluggish demands for its TVs and other consumer electronics products offset hard-won gains from a slowly recovering computer chip market. Samsung’s operating profit was measured at 2.8 trillion won ($2.1 billion) for the three months through December, compared to 4.3 trillion ($3.2 billion) from the same period last year. Its operating profit for the full year 2023 was at 6.5 trillion won ($4.8 billion), which marked an 85% decline from 2022 and represented the company’s lowest since 2008, when global markets were weathering a financial crisis. While the company’s semiconductor division posted a loss of 14.9 trillion won ($11 billion) in 2023, the losses narrowed during the fourth quarter, with the DRAM business returning to profit. “In 2024, the memory business expects the market to continue to recover despite various potential obstacles, including interest rate policies and geopolitical issues,” Samsung said in a statement.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Samsung Electronics on Tuesday reported its highest quarterly profit for the year as losses from its computer chip business narrowed amid a slow recovery in global demand. Samsung said it expects its business to further improve in coming months, considering the replacement cycles of personal computers and smartphones and the expansion of artificial intelligence-based devices and services, which has been increasing the demand for its DRAM chips. The South Korean technology giant’s 2.43 trillion won ($1.8 billion) operating profit for the three months to September still marked a 77.6% decline from the same period last year as the company in past months has grappled with weak memory chip prices and the global economic shock of Russia’s war on Ukraine. The company’s 67.4 trillion won ($50 billion) revenue for the last quarter was a 12.2% drop from a year earlier. Samsung said the losses from its memory chip business fell from 4.36 trillion won ($3.2 billion) in the second quarter to 3.75 trillion won ($2.78 billion) for the July-September period.

The United States had been expected to extend a waiver granted to the South Korean chipmakers on a requirement for licenses to bring US chip equipment into China. The United States has already notified Samsung and SK Hynix of the decision, indicating that it is in effect, Choi said. Samsung and SK Hynix, the world’s largest and second-largest memory chipmakers, have invested billions of dollars in their chip production facilities in China and welcomed the move. SK Hynix said: “We welcome the US government’s decision to extend a waiver with regard to the export control regulations.
