The staggering box office results made the film’s director Greta Gerwig the first solo female director with a billion-dollar movie. It’s why many felt equally as shocked when Gerwig did not get nominated in the best director category last week. “Barbie” earned a total of eight Oscar nods, including best picture – which Robbie was recognized for as a producer. Ferrara told Variety in an interview last week that she, too, was “incredibly disappointed” that Gerwig and Robbie weren’t individually nominated.

CNN —A historic ruling by the United Nations’ top court in a genocide case against Israel on Friday was welcomed by the three main parties it involved: Israel, South Africa and the Palestinians. The International Court of Justice in The Hague, the Netherlands, ordered Israel to “take all measures” to prevent genocide in Gaza after South Africa accused Israel of violating international laws on genocide in its war in the territory. It rejected Israel’s request for the case to be thrown out, but it also stopped short of ordering Israel to halt the war as South Africa has asked. “I would have wanted a ceasefire,” said South African foreign minister Naledi Pandor after the ruling in The Hague. Mohammed el-Kurd, a Palestinian activist from Jerusalem, said the ICJ failed on South Africa’s “most important request” to suspend the military operations.

DAY, by Michael CunninghamMichael Cunningham’s new novel, “Day,” visits a family on April 5 in 2019, 2020 and 2021 — before, during and after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, which shadows the book although the words “Covid” and “pandemic” never appear. Both she and Dan consider her gay brother, Robbie, a sixth-grade teacher who lives alone in the attic of their brownstone, to be their closest friend. The novel’s first April day, in 2019, finds Isabel apologizing to Robbie because she and Dan are about to evict him. To soften the blow, Isabel recalls an old daydream. In his first novel, “A Home at the End of the World,” a gay man, a bisexual man and a straight woman tried to raise a child in an upstate house.

The Oscar nominee said the “Pirates of the Caribbean” spinoff in which she was set to star has been canceled. Robbie said work had stopped on the planned “Pirates” film because Disney didn’t want to move forward with it, according to her Vanity Fair cover story. Robbie and Hodson were first attached to the project in June 2020, one of two planned “Pirates” films, the Hollywood Reporter said at the time. The film series’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed Robbie’s involvement as recently as May of this year. The original “Pirates” film series was loosely inspired by the Disney theme park ride of the same name and starred Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.

CNN —Chris Rock is coming live to a screen near you. Netflix announced Thursday that the legendary comedian will make history as the headliner of the streaming giant’s first-ever live, global streaming event. “We’re thrilled the entire world will be able to experience a live Chris Rock comedy event and be a part of Netflix history. Though this will be Netflix’s first time streaming one, it is no stranger to live comedy events. Rock’s live Netflix comedy special is set to stream in early 2023.
