CNN —Menthol cigarette bans are effective at getting people to quit smoking, new research finds. The pooled results show that about a quarter of menthol smokers quit within a year or two when the substance is banned from cigarettes. Menthol cigarette smoking rates were lower in settings with national bans and highest when there were only local or statewide bans. Even if just a quarter of menthol smokers quit, it could improve the health of thousands of people. Menthol itself isn’t addictive, but menthol cigarettes are more attractive to new smokers, studies show, because the flavoring masks the harsh taste and smell that may put some new smokers off.

An independent commission is investigating the October shootings that killed 18 people in a bowling alley and a restaurant in the worst mass shooting in Maine history. Janet Mills said the panel needs subpoena power, in part to access the shooter's military records. The judiciary committee could vote on the bill seeking subpoena power on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the committee said. Mills' proposal for subpoena power has the backing of the Democratic and Republican leaders of both houses of the Legislature. The independent commission investigating the shootings is expected to look into potential missed opportunities to prevent the shootings.

But the union said the limited duration strike on a key promotion day for Starbucks is important in its efforts to win their first contract at the chain. The union, Starbucks Workers United, won its first representation vote at the company in December 2021, at a store in Buffalo, New York. But many of the stores on strike remained open in past strikes, because management replaced the unionized striking workers with workers from nearby non-union stores and managers. That’s possible because of the close proximity of many Starbucks stores to one another. The union earlier this fall filed an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB over Starbucks’ refusal to bargain around promotion days.

The Oscars are enlisting a group of live television veterans to oversee its 96th show in March. Hamilton, meanwhile, has three Academy Award telecasts on his resume already, including the 82nd Oscars hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin and the 86th Oscars hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, in addition to 14 Super Bowl halftime shows and the London Olympics opening. The 96th Oscars are scheduled for Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. “Having worked with Raj, Katy and Hamish on many special and memorable projects over the years, we have full confidence in their vision for the 96th Oscars,” Walt Disney Television executive Rob Mills said. Google and Microsoft have since rolled out AI tools as well, which work the same way and are powered by large language models that are trained on vast troves of online data. When users input information into these tools, McCreary said, “You don’t know how it’s then going to be used.” That raises particularly high concerns for companies. Amid news surrounding failed cryptocurrency firm FTX, social media users are pointing to FTX having funded the TOGETHER Trial, a research consortium that studied ivermectin as a COVID-19 treatment and found it to be ineffective. But FTX did not interact with the research group until after the ivermectin trial was over, a TOGETHER Trial spokesperson told Reuters. An Instagram user shared an image that said, “Holy crap look who funded the trial that said Ivermectin didn’t work” (here). FTX is not named as a contributor to the ivermectin trial because they weren’t involved, according to Mills, who added that the same is true of hydroxychloroquine and the other medications TOGETHER Trial investigated during the pandemic.

New York CNN Business —OPEC+’s decision to slash oil production has set off bipartisan fury in Washington directed at the Saudi Arabia-led group, raising calls for a hard-hitting US response. And as Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna told CNN earlier this week, in some ways the United States is less dependent on Saudi Arabia and other OPEC nations than in the past. US oil production has skyrocketed over the past 15 years, driving down foreign oil imports. Last year, US crude oil imports from OPEC nations stood at just 798,000 barrels per day. OPEC nations are among the only countries with the firepower to fill any gap created by the potential loss of Russian supply.
