☆ Opinion: May is the month when we honor Asian Americans. Here’s what a lot of people get wrong

CNN —As we near the end of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed. Regina Kim Courtesy Regina KimBut too often, efforts to honor the contributions of Asian Americans, however well-intentioned, fall short because people fail to differentiate between Asian Americans and Asian communities outside the US. A recent study by the Asian American Foundation found that over half of Americans can’t name a single famous Asian American. This may be one reason why so many Americans can’t name any Asian Americans of note. The media needs to make a conscientious effort to seek out, identify and spotlight Asian Americans — and not just during AANHPI Heritage Month.

Falling prices of commodities like copper and lumber “negatively impacted” Home Depot’s third-quarter earnings, CEO Ted Decker told investors on the company’s earnings call earlier this week. In particular, they're noticing consumers pushing off bigger-ticket purchases like appliances, which have become cheaper compared to a year ago. But the problem with deflation is that when people begin to expect lower prices in the future, they have little incentive to make purchases right now. In China, however, prices across all goods and services were 0.2% lower in October compared to the same month last year. He also warned that US-based Walmarts could enter “a deflationary environment.”Besides eggs, other cheaper goods include airfares, gasoline, appliances and smartphones.

Astronomers dubbed the celestial object the “Tasmanian devil,” and they observed it exploding repeatedly following its initial detection in September 2022. But the Tasmanian devil is revealing more questions than answers with its unexpected behavior. While LFBOTs are unusual events, the Tasmanian devil is even stranger, causing astronomers to question the processes behind the repetitive explosions. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Sacramento’s top prosecutor is suing the city’s leaders over failure to cleanup homeless encampments, escalating a monthslong dispute with leaders in California’s capital city. A group of residents and business owners also filed a companion lawsuit against the city. The lawsuit includes accounts from dozens of city residents living around 14 encampments. Roughly three-quarters of the county’s homeless population is unsheltered, and the majority of that group are living on Sacramento streets. City Attorney Susana Alcala Wood's office has also repeatedly urged Ho to work with the city to address the issue, she said.

New York CNN —Hostess, the maker of Twinkies and Ho Hos, is being purchased by J.M. Hostess stockholders will get $30 in cash along with .03002 shares of Smucker’s stock for each Hostess share they own, with the deal expected to close in 2024. Hostess was founded in 1919 and started making Twinkies in 1930. It filed for bankruptcy in January 2012, and stopped making its products, including Twinkies, in November of that year during a strike by Bakery Workers union. The firms of Apollo Global Management and C. Dean Metropoulos & Co. returned Twinkies to store shelves in July 2013 after acquiring the asset from Hostess.

And it represents another incremental tweak to the virus rather than a major evolutionary leap like the original Omicron strain. This mutation has appeared in other coronavirus variants before.
