“Kamala Harris isn’t talking about the historic nature of this,” Walz, the Democratic running mate, told supporters here at a rally. But the strategies of both sides have overlapping objectives, with Trump working to widen his advantage with White men while making gains among young Black and Latino voters. “They both have their qualities, they both have their flaws,” said Hernandez, a North Carolina voter who is torn between Trump and Harris. But the Trump campaign is also targeting many of the same voters, particularly young men whose decision whether to vote – and for whom – could be a turning point in the election. Women make up a slim majority of the electorate, but the degree to which Trump can hold onto male voters could determine the outcome of the November election.

CNN —It was an attack that sent shockwaves through a country long considered a pioneer in LGBTQ rights. Local LGBTQ rights advocates condemned the attack as a hate crime and lesbicide, saying the women were targeted because of their sexual identity. After taking office in December, Milei took steps that critics say weakened protections for LGBTQ groups. The recent attacks have galvanized activists to fight for new policies and actions that would further protect LGBTQ rights. He also said that to reduce attacks on LGBTQ communities, their voices and demands should be amplified in more societal sectors.

New York CNN —Airbnb has undermined users’ safety by scaling back its work to remove extremists from its platform, a former contractor alleged in a new whistleblower complaint. “Airbnb spent much of 2023 scaling back and undermining the work of its team tasked with removing individuals affiliated with dangerous and extremist organizations from the platform,” Whistleblower Aid, the organization representing Hernandez, said in a statement. Airbnb disputed Hernandez’s claims, saying that it continues to enforce against members of dangerous or extremist organizations. And in the following years, it pointed to that pledge when removing users associated with extremist organizations. Prior to her work at Airbnb, Hernandez worked as a researcher for the Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium, an organization that tracks terrorist and hate groups, according to Whistleblower Aid.

CNN —Many Americans may get hot under the collar when they open their electric bills this summer, but for some, the consequences of rising utility costs can be a lot more serious. He pointed to the National Weather Service’s prediction that much of the country will probably have above-normal temperatures this summer. The difference in projections stems from the association assuming higher rates of usage because of hotter temperatures, Wolfe said. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP, has $4.1 billion to help consumers with heating and cooling costs, down from $6.1 billion in the prior fiscal year. “Because of the lack of a coherent policy to address summer cooling, people will die this summer from heatstroke,” Wolfe said.

Its data is used in everything from hurricane forecasting and fisheries to Coast Guard search and rescue – IOOS data can help the Coast Guard narrow down a search area by two-thirds. Despite President Joe Biden’s ambitious climate goals, his recent budget proposal would slash the program’s funding from $42.5 million to $10 million. Ocean data collection is “the only way we can really understand what is happening,” said Kristen Yarincik, executive director of the IOOS Association, the nonprofit that works with NOAA collecting data. IOOS has added 97 water level stations along the coasts of the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida in the last few years. “At least half of the water level sensor network would be compromised with this funding cut.”

CNN —It could take weeks for the Port of Baltimore to reopen as an arduous cleanup process to clear the massive wreckage from this week’s catastrophic bridge collapse begins, leaving commuters and workers in limbo and supply chains in disarray, officials said. More than 1,000 engineers in Baltimore and across the country are studying the wreckage piece-by-piece to figure out the best plan to remove it. To help with this massive task, more heavy equipment is expected at the scene in the coming weeks. The port is the largest in the US for cars and light trucks, handling a record 850,000 vehicles last year, Moore said. “Our economy depends on the Port of Baltimore and the Port of Baltimore depends on vessel traffic,” Moore said Friday.

Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Dr. Jason Westin regularly witnesses the power of lifesaving cancer drugs. But because generic cancer drugs are often in shortage in the United States, he says, he and his patients have been put in a terrible position. Makers of generic drugs don’t have to share information about the supply chain, so buyers currently choose based only on price. Hernandez told the Senate committee that of the top 50 generic drugs paid for by Medicare Part D, 16 were marked up 1,000% or higher. Until there is some kind of legislation that addresses drug shortages, Wosińska and the other experts agreed, they will continue.

CNN —A slew of viral conspiracy videos on social media have made baseless claims that the Maui wildfires were started intentionally as part of a land grab, highlighting how quickly misinformation spreads after a disaster. Still, conspiracy theories continue to circulate as nearly 400 people are still unaccounted for. It’s not uncommon for conspiracy theories to make the rounds after a national crisis. Social media platform X did not immediately respond to a request for comment. That means posts sharing conspiracy theories that spark fear and emotion may perform better in a crisis than those sharing straightforward, accurate information.

“One, two, three,” Hernandez, founder of the Pacific Islander dance group Lei Pasifika, yells out. “It makes them less homesick.”According to the US Census Bureau, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders were the fastest growing ethnic population in the US from 2020 to 2021. And in big cities with a large Pacific Islander presence, like New York, Portland, Oregon, and San Diego, many US-born Pacific Islanders as well as transplants are keeping their culture alive through dance. It’s a way for Pacific Islanders, especially young people, “to find themselves” and get connected with their ethnic identity and cultures, she notes. Mann says they noticed a growing number of Pacific Islanders, including those who aren’t Native Pacific Islanders but grew up in the islands, wanting to learn more about the culture and participate in dances.
Federal worker safety inspections have alleged poor maintenance or a lack of safety training at some Tyson plants where ammonia leaks injured workers. CNN interviewed eleven current or former Tyson workers across three different plants who experienced ammonia leaks. !”A safety sign hangs on a fence at a Tyson plant in Hope, Arkansas, in March 2023. Still, some Tyson workers who lived through ammonia leaks said they wished more had been done to protect them. That means that the data doesn’t necessarily cover Tyson plants or other meat facilities that hold smaller amounts of ammonia.

But, across the country, affordable housing is becoming increasingly rare to find. That is until they discovered a Civil Rights era approach that helps promote home ownership, particularly among minority groups, who are disproportionately impacted by the affordable housing crisis. This year they joined the Beverly-Vermont CLT, one of at least five in Los Angeles and more than 200 nationwide. While CLTs are a solution, Ventura admits there are — and should be — other affordable housing options to adequately address the crisis. However, efforts to transform them into affordable housing in some neighborhoods have proven controversial among existing homeowners.
