One after another, for four days, the testimonies for Donald J. Trump poured out. “God spared his life,” Franklin Graham, the evangelist, proclaimed. “Divine intervention” saved his father from the assassin’s bullet, Eric Trump said. Ben Carson, the former secretary of housing and urban development, said that when he saw his friend “escape death by mere inches” his thoughts “immediately turned to the book of Isaiah, which says, ‘No weapon formed against you shall prosper.’”And Mr. Trump himself said at the Republican National Convention, “I felt very safe because I had God on my side.”As many in the audience nodded and cried in the darkness, the message was unmistakable. Even as his speech was criticized by many for its divisive tone and length, for these believers, Mr. Trump appears supernaturally anointed, an embodiment of God’s blessing.

The sense of grievance erupted as powerfully as the verdict itself. But their discontent was about more than the 34 felony counts that Mr. Trump was convicted on, which his supporters quickly dismissed as politically motivated. They saw in the jury’s finding a rejection of themselves, and the values they believed their nation should uphold. But for many staunch Trump loyalists — people who for years have listened to and believed Mr. Trump’s baseless claims that the system is rigged against him, and them — the verdict on Thursday threatened to shatter their faith in democracy itself. The democracy that we have known and cherished in this nation is now threatened,” Franklin Graham, the evangelist, said in an interview from Alaska.

NEW YORK (AP) — The mild-mannered Franklin — the first Black character in the “Peanuts” comic strip — gets to shine in his own animated Apple TV+ special this month in a story about friendship. Franklin and Charlie Brown soon enter a soap box derby competition and their friendship is tested before a deep bond is forged. In the new special, Franklin is specifically asked to come sit with his new pals on their side during a pizza party celebration. The bill has since been misinterpreted due to language surrounding the phrase “perinatal death” in one of its sections (here). Perinatal death, by one of three definitions by the American Academy of Pediatrics published in May 2016, is the fetal death starting at gestation of 20 weeks and ending at infant death up to 28 days of age (see “Definitions” section on “perinatal death”) (here). BILL AMENDEDThe bill’s language on “perinatal death” was amended twice in assembly before reaching the state senate (see different versions of the bill) (here). BILL DOES NOT DECRIMINALIZE INFANTICIDELaw professors on reproductive health consulted by Reuters said the bill does not decriminalize infanticide and the amendment sought to limit misinterpretation of its language. A California reproductive health bill does not legalize infanticide or killing babies up to 28 days old.

In 2012, First Day Hikes went nationwide when the National Association of State Park Directors endorsed the idea. Elijah Bristow State Park near Eugene is even offering a first day horseback ride.
CNN —Jennifer Lawrence shared her thoughts on the history of female-led action movies in a new interview, but the “Hunger Games” star is getting some flack for not quite getting it right. The Oscar winner spoke with fellow actress Viola Davis in an interview for Variety published on Wednesday, in which she mused on the past state of action movies with a female lead. People on social media were quick to point out, however, that Lawrence was far from the first female action hero, with many tweets referencing Sigourney Weaver in the “Alien” franchise, Linda Hamilton in the “Terminator” movies and Pam Grier in films like “Foxy Brown” – all of which predate “The Hunger Games” franchise. “It is absolutely true that Hollywood had and has a real bias against women driven action movies because of this ridiculous belief about who identifies with whom.”Other examples brought to light in comments on Twitter and beyond pointed to Michelle Yeoh in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and other films, Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez in the “Resident Evil” franchise, Uma Thurman in “Kill Bill” and Angelina Jolie in the “Tomb Raider” movies. CNN has reached out to representatives of Jennifer Lawrence for clarification on her statement.

As a science fiction writer, Butler forged a new path and envisioned bold possibilities. Mural with a portrait of Octavia Butler and her name, composed of dots of various densities in 3-D space. In 1995, she became the first science fiction writer to be awarded a MacArthur “genius” grant. “‘Kindred’ was a story of ordinary people trapped in fantastic circumstances,” Butler wrote in a 1988 notebook. Her point of view was one not traditionally found in science fiction and, simply by writing, she demanded a larger world.
On key issues like abortion and election denialism, Tim Michels, the Republican nominee for governor of Wisconsin, is not moving toward the political middle down the homestretch to Election Day. Michels, following a pattern of other Republican candidates in governor’s races in states like Arizona and Pennsylvania, has not done so. "A change on the abortion issue might even be counterproductive, doesn’t help him with the base and doesn’t help him with moderates or independents." It lets him speak to the base and to independents at the same time.”Michels is locked in a close race with Gov. Michels campaign adviser Chris Walker did not respond to questions about Michels’ strategy on abortion or election issues.
