Four right-wing parties in the Netherlands said on Wednesday that they had reached a preliminary agreement to form a government that would exclude Geert Wilders, a populist politician, from becoming prime minister. But the chances of forming a government were high, and the parties’ leaders expressed optimism. “This won’t go wrong,” Caroline van der Plas, the leader of the Farmer Citizen Movement, a populist pro-farmer party, told reporters on Wednesday. In response, Mr. Wilders posted two prayer hands and a sun emoji on the social media platform X. The agreement would still largely depend on Mr. Wilders’s party, Party for Freedom, which won elections decisively last fall, sending shock waves through the Dutch political system.

New York CNN —Some progressives have frequently blamed corporate greed for fueling the high cost of living that Americans are fed up with. That’s corporate greed. That’s corporate greed. Although the paper did not directly mention corporate greed, shrinkflation or Biden, the research undercuts the argument that greedflation drove the early inflation. That report found corporate profits were to blame for 34% of inflation since the start of Covid-19.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Women lead the major categories at the Grammys this year – names like SZA, Taylor Swift, Victoria Monét, Phoebe Bridgers, Olivia Rodrigo and Brandy Clark top the list. If Taylor Swift wins for “Midnights,” she will become the first artist in Grammy history to win the top prize four times. (And, conversely, artists it loves to nominate but not award: both Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus have yet to receive a Grammy. I'd love to see a Cyrus win, but I’ve been burned before! She’s tied with the likes of Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus with six nominations, and I think it is her time to finally take home a trophy.

CNN —A coalition of unions representing thousands of Kaiser Permanente health care workers warned they will walk off the job again next month if a deal is not reached with their employer. The first strike began on October 4 and ended on October 7 after an employment contract for 75,000 Kaiser workers expired without a new agreement. Spanning multiple states, it was the first national strike effort at Kaiser Permanente and the largest health care worker strike in US history. Kaiser said it has already hired 10,000 workers for union-represented roles so far in 2023. In a statement, Vincent Staupe, a spokesperson for Kaiser Permanente, said the health care organization has received notice from the unions of the potential strike.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A massive health care strike over wages and staffing shortages headed into its final day on Friday without a deal between industry giant Kaiser Permanente and the unions representing the 75,000 workers who picketed this week. “No health care worker wants to go on strike,” Caroline Lucas, the coalition's executive director, said Thursday. The strike comes in a year when there have been work stoppages within multiple industries, including transportation, entertainment and hospitality. The health care industry alone has been hit by several strikes this year as it confronts burnout from heavy workloads — problems greatly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The White House on Thursday said President Joe Biden “always” supports union members who choose to strike when asked about the demonstration by Kaiser workers.

“They got the wrong man,” Caroline Smith said during opening statements in the trial of Logan Clegg in Concord. The newly retired couple were killed shortly after going for a walk on the trail near their Concord apartment on April 18, 2022. Shell casings also were found at a location later discovered to be Clegg's tent site. She said a state police forensic laboratory analysis showed the casings were fired from Clegg's gun. She said a criminologist could not say that Clegg's gun was the one used to fire the shots.

CNN —When FBI agents arrived at James Nott’s Kentucky apartment with a search warrant on Tuesday, they asked if anyone else was home. Nott has not been charged with crimes connected with the body parts. It all started last summer, when the police in East Pennsboro Township, Pennsylvania, received a tip about possible human remains located at the home of a man named Jeremy Pauley, according to the complaint. Officers searched his home in Enola, Pennsylvania, and found organs and skin, among other human remains, the FBI said. During the FBI investigation, Pauley told agents about a network of people buying and selling stolen human body parts.

The Coronation Vestments, comprising of the Supertunica and the Imperial Mantle, which will be worn by Britain's King Charles III during his coronation, displayed in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace, London, on April 26. Victoria Jones-Pool/Getty ImagesBuckingham Palace has revealed some of the historical items King Charles III will don for his coronation ceremony on Saturday, including items previously worn by his mother and grandfather for their own crowning moments. Both items are normally on display in the Tower of London and were last worn by Charles' mother at her coronation. The whole look: The Supertunica was made in 1911 for the coronation of King George V and was later worn by King George VI for his 1937 coronation. When it comes to accessories, King Charles will also have a "Coronation Gauntlet" – effectively a fancy white leather glove, embroidered with national emblems including the Tudor rose, thistle, shamrock, oak leaves and acorns.
The CPTPP is a free trade agreement with 11 members: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, New Zealand, Singapore and Vietnam. The UK agreement comes almost two years after it began talks to join the pact. The UK Office for Budget Responsibility, which produces economic forecasts for the government, expects Brexit to reduce Britain’s output by 4% over 15 years compared with remaining in the bloc. Becoming a CPTPP member means that more than 99% of UK exports to the 11 other countries will now be eligible for tariff-free trade. Services made up a huge chunk — 43% — of overall UK trade with CPTPP members last year, according to Sunak’s office.
London CNN —Gold is shining once again, as investors bet that cooling inflation in the United States will slow the pace of Fed rate hikes and make the precious metal more attractive. Gold prices slumped in April last year as the US Federal Reserve started to hike interest rates in a bid to tame runaway inflation. But the market is increasingly expecting the Fed to temper US rate hikes as consumer prices increases slow, boosting demand for gold. During the coronavirus pandemic in August 2020, gold prices hit an all-time high of £2,072. That could make gold more appealing now that yields and the dollar are less of a negative factor,” he told CNN.
