Netflix has just announced the next leading lady for “Bridgerton”: Korean Australian actor Yerin Ha. Ha, 29, who is known for her work in “Halo” and “Dune: Prophecy,” will star as Sophie Baek, the love interest of Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) in season 4 of the hit period series. “What drew me to Sophie was that she immediately has obstacles — something that she constantly has to overcome,” Ha told Tudum. “It wasn’t until I started seeing the monitors and the shots of me and Charithra [Chandran, who played Edwina] on screen and it was two dark-skinned Indian women, two Tamil women on screen,” Ashley told NBC News in 2022. Ha will be the second Asian love interest on the show, and after Ashley’s season broke Netflix weekly streaming records, fans in the comments say they’re more than excited.

See here: Wells Fargo this week disclosed that it had fired more than a dozen employees for “simulation of keyboard activity,” Bloomberg reported, citing filings to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. In other words, they were faking work, perhaps with the kind of mouse jiggler that you can buy online for $20. At any rate, some bankers over at Wells Fargo seem to have gotten caught last month. “And that’s a symptom of a much larger problem.”In Wells Fargo’s case, managerial mistrust would be understandable, given the bank’s history. Since then, Wells has been trying to reform its own internal culture while trying to repair its brand.

“There’s just less dollars for consumers to spend.”The challenge for retailers now is to shake consumers out of that frugal mindset. Retail spending has increased in seven of the past 10 months through March. “If you want to convince consumers to spend you have to give them a reason to do so. Lower prices are a clear opportunity to drive people into the store or online.”It’s a lever that Walmart, he said, has pulled forever. Clothing chain H&M told analysts during its most recent earnings call that it, too, would lower prices.

It brings the U.S. closer to the European Union and California, which moved ahead earlier with corporate climate disclosure rules. The narrowed rule doesn’t include requirements that companies report some indirect emissions known as Scope 3. And small or emerging companies don’t have to report emissions at all. The SEC has said many companies already report such information, and the SEC’s rule would standardize such disclosures. More than 5,300 companies will be required to report their emissions under the California rule, according to Ceres, a nonprofit that works with investors and companies to address environmental challenges.

CNN —Louisiana lawmakers on Friday approved a new congressional map that gives the state a second Black-majority US House district and likely puts at risk a Republican-controlled seat. The new map creates a second majority-Black district, slicing through the middle of the state, in a district currently held by Republican Rep. Garret Graves. And, in drawing the new lines, Louisiana’s GOP lawmakers rebuffed a public entreaty from House Speaker Mike Johnson, a fellow Louisiana Republican, to continue fighting the court order. Republican state lawmakers and Landry this week warned that if legislators failed to draw the map themselves, they would hand over the power to a federal judge. The new maps approved Friday protect Johnson’s seat, along with that of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, another Louisiana GOP congressman.

More than 50 years earlier, when he was 20 years old, he’d robbed an Ohio bank of $215,000. A day or so after her father’s shocking revelation, Ashley told CNN she pulled her mother Kathy aside and told her. Theodore "Ted" Conrad was an unassuming bank teller when he strolled out of an Ohio bank with more than $200,000. The Laid-Back Charm of Bistro Sets“Bistro sets remind us of spending warm days in a European city,” said Ksenia Kagner, co-founder of Civilian, a building and design studio in Brooklyn. She appreciates the table-and-chairs groupings’ lack of formality and pretension. “They convey a sense of retreat and nostalgia.” Ashley Macuga of Collected Interiors finds they nestle nicely where a traditional outdoor dining room table won’t fit. We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Not to worry, said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a veteran of debt limit battles. McConnell’s reassurance that all will work out in the end is validated by history, but that doesn’t mean this time couldn’t be different. “If female voters are key to a Donald Trump victory in 2024, the former president should be in big trouble – but he doesn’t seem to care,” Jill Filipovic observed. “The town hall audience – selected on the basis of their intention to vote in the Republican primary in New Hampshire – appeared to be made up mostly of Trump fans.
New York CNN —Silicon Valley Bank’s 48-hour collapse led to the second-largest failure of a financial institution in US history. Its stunning, and seemingly rapid, fall is the largest shutdown of a US bank since Washington Mutual in 2008. “That’s because its depositors were withdrawing their money so fast that the bank was insolvent, and an intraday closure was unavoidable due to a classic bank run.”High interest rates led to its demiseTo combat rampant inflation, the central bank has been aggressively raising interest rates since 2022. When interest rates were near historical lows, the banks bought up on long-dated, seemingly low-risk Treasuries. Faced with these higher interest rates, loss of IPOs and a funding drought, SVB’s clients began pulling money out of the bank.
CNN —Around 10 of the more than two dozen women who accused Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson of sexual misconduct were expected to attend his game in Houston on Sunday, according to their attorney. I was proud of them for that,” Tony Buzbee, the lawyer representing the accusers attending the game, told CNN in a statement. Makes me proud they want to stand up and be counted rather than quietly go away.”The NFL and the Cleveland Browns did not respond to CNN’s request for comment regarding the accusers’ attendance. We’re a huge football town, folks here have been lifelong fans of the Cleveland Browns,” Greene said. We believe that Deshaun Watson deserves a second chance.”The team’s “refusal to prioritize protecting women sends a disgusting message” to survivors of sexual assault, Nunes said.
Wonder Bread hopes its latest stunt can help. The 101-year-old bread maker will have a float in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, marking the first-time ever the kitchen staple has joined the lineup. But we’re also changing and evolving and bringing new things to the consumer every day.”A rendering of Wonder Bread's first-ever float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Wonder Bread will participate in the parade for the next three years with the same design. “It’s a classic brand,” Smith said.
This piece has been adapted from "We Are Proud Boys: How a Right-Wing Street Gang Ushered in a New Era of American Extremism," by Andy Campbell. Indeed, leaders of the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys extremist groups face seditious conspiracy charges over what the Justice Department believes is an outsize role in the planning and execution of the insurrection. In an interview with me, one of the antifascists, a woman who supports medics in the field at demonstrations, recalled a harrowing scene in which a group of Proud Boys had her crew cornered and outnumbered, when one of them lunged at her:The Proud Boys started spraying something into the crowd. Those concerns are paramount for all antifascist activists, but especially among women fighting back against misogynist groups like the Proud Boys. Central banks in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Norway, Indonesia, South Africa, Taiwan, Nigeria and the Philippines followed the Fed in boosting rates over the past week. This dynamic — in which the Fed essentially exports inflation — adds pressure on local central banks. (The Bank of Japan has remained an outlier among major central banks and has resisted hiking rates despite an uptick in inflation.) Nigeria’s central bank hiked rates to 15.5% on Tuesday, much higher than economists had expected. That means the dollar could yet climb further, and other central banks won’t be able to relax.
