Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell also told the group his was open to their ideas, Republicans said. Schumer said work was still progressing on two tracks - one a bipartisan infrastructure bill and the other a measure that if brought to the floor, could pass with only Democratic votes through a maneuver called reconciliation that bypasses the rule requiring 60 votes for bills to advance. Biden and Schumer have talked about such a two-track approach“I was told verbally, stuff, I’ve asked for paper, I’ll look at it,” Schumer said. He and Democratic Senator Jon Tester also spoke of a provision that might raise revenue by having the Internal Revenue Service go after tax cheats. In the latest bipartisan discussions, Republican lawmakers said the group reached tentative conclusions on specific spending provisions that it would pay for without raising taxes.

The Senate is scheduled to hold a series of votes Thursday on the China bill. McConnell has been lukewarm on the China bill. ‘My favorite philosopher, Mick Jagger’Democrats see the China bill as the test of bipartisan cooperation. Proponents of abolishing the filibuster say the commission vote proves the Senate isn’t functioning, a message likely to be amplified if the China bill flounders. “If the Jan. 6 commission can’t make it through the Senate it’s further evidence of how the filibuster under Mitch McConnell is strangling our democracy,” she said.

Congressional Democrats will introduce a bill to make it illegal for any school receiving federal funding to use seclusion or dangerous restraints on students. “The data tells us that seclusion and restraint practices in school are dangerous, ineffective and predominately used against kids of color and students with disabilities,” Murphy said in a statement. The Act was originally introduced in 2018 as experts said seclusion and forceful restraints could traumatize children and lead to injuries or death. I've been training officers, and an officer's willingness to look for a different approach is dramatic in most places," Thurau said in a previous interview. WASHINGTON — After years of failed attempts to pass a firearms background check bill, two senators think they have a path to agreement — at least on one key component of a deal. House-passed legislation to require background checks on nearly all gun purchases has stalled in the Senate. The senators say an ambiguity in the law has enabled unlicensed sellers to transfer weapons to dangerous people who skirt the background check system. A gun shop employee shows guns to customers at SP Firearms Unlimited in Franklin Square, New York on August 6, 2021. The two crafted the modest "Fix NICS" legislation to improve reporting into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System that passed Congress with broad support in 2017 and was signed into law.

There’s no central Pride event planned this year, but Duchmann isn't worried. Now, Pride — in New York and beyond — will return with a mix of in-person and virtual events. NYC Pride organizers will hold virtual events like a family movie night, a human rights conference and a rally, among others. Some LGBTQ people said, regardless of the number of precautions taken, they don’t feel safe attending in-person Pride events just yet. Patrick Murphy, 71, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, said he and his partner of 49 years will be attending an in-person event.

The state of New Jersey introduced a new program on Monday offering a free beer to those who get a Covid-19 vaccine in May. Phil Murphy announced on Twitter that the state was teaming up with over a dozen breweries for the “Shot and a Beer” project. “We’re launching our ‘Shot and a Beer’ program to encourage eligible New Jerseyans ages 21+ to get vaccinated,” Murphy said. Any New Jerseyan who gets their first vaccine dose in the month of May and takes their vaccination card to a participating brewery will receive a free beer. “We are putting into overdrive our work to hit our initial target of 4.7 million vaccinated New Jerseyans by June 30th,” Murphy said.

Of the more than 12,000 local police departments around the country, roughly half have body cameras, but having body cameras doesn’t mean they’ll be used properly. With Murphy’s oversight, the department installed a raft of new policies and procedures, including new guidelines on the use of body cameras. The new Baltimore body camera policy requires officers to turn them on as soon as possible when responding to an incident. There is, however, some footage from Baker's body camera of the moments leading up to McCree’s death. NBC News reviewed the police department's body camera policy last September, but it's not clear whether it has been updated.

Several governors on Friday accused Azar of deceiving them about how many doses they could expect in the near future. Frieden said in an interview that there’s so little basic information available about where the nation’s vaccine doses are and what’s coming that it’s difficult to know where the bottlenecks are. Patrick Allen, director of the Oregon Health Authority, sent a letter to the Trump administration seeking clarification on the federal government’s vaccine inventory. Tim Walz, a Democrat, accused federal health officials of “lying” about the existence of a federal stockpile. Still, some public health experts said they struggled to see any part of the vaccine supply chain that was working well.

Ask the feds, and they’ll say they’ve distributed far more doses than the states have used, leaving vaccines on the shelf. And that is frustrating public health experts who say that the Trump administration’s coronavirus vaccination team seems to be sleep-walking through its final days. Johnson said that they would be revoked in response to the rollout of coronavirus vaccines. Deciding who should be first in line for limited vaccine doses has been a challenge around the world, with many countries prioritizing vulnerable medics and the elderly. The company’s Covid-19 vaccine uses genetic material called messenger RNA, or mRNA, to trigger the immune system to produce protective antibodies without using actual bits of the virus.

The defendants are among 121 people affiliated with the dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) who are charged with treason and incitement. The charges against party leader Kem Sokha stem from accusations he conspired with the United States to overthrow Hun Sen, who has ruled Cambodia for 36 years. Kem Sokha and Washington reject the accusations. Amnesty International’s Asia-Pacific Regional Director Yamini Mishra in a statement called the mass trials “an affront to international fair trial standards” and Cambodia’s human rights commitments. Government spokesman Phay Siphan said defendants would be allowed to return to Cambodia but must abide by the court’s decision.

· Source: EmsiIn 2020, the sports industry in North America was projected to generate $75.7 billion, according to PwC, the accounting firm. Instead, it lost more than a third of its value as leagues suspended play before returning with stripped-down seasons. Since then, economists estimate that millions of dollars have been lost in wages, and in sales for surrounding businesses dependent on rabid Packers fans. As a result, $58.9 million could be lost in local, state and federal taxes over the course of the year. According to Emsi, the cancellation cost about $22.9 million in lost economic activity, including $3.4 million in hotel revenue.

Slideshow ( 2 images )WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. federal agency that must sign off on the presidential transition told President-elect Joe Biden on Monday that he can formally begin the hand-over process. The GSA had said Murphy, who was appointed to her job by Trump in 2017, would “ascertain” or formally approve, the transition when the winner was clear. “Contrary to media reports and insinuations, my decision was not made out of fear or favoritism,” Murphy wrote. Biden is due to take office on Jan. 20 after having won the election with enough state-by-state electoral votes to secure the Electoral College win. Trump’s fellow Republicans have slowly broken from the president in recent days to urge the transition process to start.

Emily Murphy, administrator of the General Services Administration, must “ascertain” the winner of the Nov. 3 presidential election between Biden and Republican President Donald Trump. That is a condition of releasing funds and resources to the winner, but she has so far not done so. Despite a clear margin of victory for Biden, Trump has refused to concede, and his legal challenges are fizzling. Trump administration sources said it was reasonable to wait until vote recounts are completed and the legal challenges have been resolved - a process that is continuing. Dave Barram, who was GSA administrator in 2000, said Murphy contacted him shortly before the election to discuss how he handled that year’s contested scenario.
