NYON, Switzerland (AP) — The future of soccer’s European Championship for the next decade was decided Tuesday — the United Kingdom and Ireland will host in 2028 and an unusual Italy-Turkey co-hosting plan was picked for 2032. Turkey finally will get to host a European Championship after several failed previous bids, including by one vote against France for the Euro 2016 edition. Co-hosting by five UEFA members in 2028 and two in 2032 follows the radical 13-nation project that was agreed for Euro 2020. Though Italy and Turkey both get direct entry to Euro 2032 as hosts, UEFA will not offer five automatic places for the 2028 hosts. UEFA aims to rebuild its cash reserves above 500 million euros ($528 million) after being depleted during the pandemic.

London CNN —UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has taken the axe to Britain’s biggest current infrastructure project, despite warnings from business leaders that the U-turn will damage investor confidence in the country. “This means £36 billion of investment in the projects that will make a real difference across our nation,” he added. “Any deviation could result in a loss of investor trust, and this would have a considerable negative impact on the UK. The ambitious HS2 project falls into this category.”The U-turn was also blasted by Richard Walker, the boss of supermarket chain Iceland, and until recently a long-time Conservative Party member. The government’s “evident inability” to deliver on major projects “is devastating to both its credibility and to business confidence,” Walker wrote in The Guardian newspaper Sunday.

The European teams competing at the 2022 Qatar World Cup walked back their plans to wear "OneLove" armbands in support of LGBTQ rights during the tournament, they announced Monday, after warnings from international soccer governing body FIFA that they would be penalized for doing so. In an unprecedented move just hours before matches began, FIFA warned it would issue a yellow card to any player wearing the armband. "As national federations, we can't put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in FIFA World Cup games." The teams from England, Wales and the Netherlands were all slated to play on Monday. "We are very frustrated by the FIFA decision which we believe is unprecedented," the teams' joint statement added and pledged to express their support for inclusion by other means.
