Attorney General Ashley Moody issued a stark warning to those who ignore evacuation orders. WFTSFlorida leaders still working to respond to damages from Hurricane Helene issued emphatic pleas to Tampa-area residents Sunday to heed evacuation orders, as Hurricane Milton is expected to strengthen and hit the state’s western coast by mid-week. “Nobody up here can save your life if you put yourself in harm’s way.”Officials expect storm surge, other flooding and high winds that knock out power, Scott said. With some roads still flooded from Helene, residents can expect a similar kind of storm surge from Milton – but this time with strong winds, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister warned. Many people are still without cell phone service after Helene, Moody said, advising residents to buy a small AM radio and a couple of batteries.

☆ Hawaiian Electric’s stock plunges again after S&P downgrades its credit rating

New York CNN —Hawaiian Electric Industries’ stock plummeted another 10% Tuesday after S&P Global downgraded the company’s credit rating to junk. In a statement, S&P Global said the wildfires have placed the company at a higher risk, and that it there is a potential for further credit downgrades. More lawsuits could arise, further jeopardizing the company’s credit rating depending on how successful the plaintiffs are. S&P said that the class action lawsuits could increase risk for the company and deteriorate its credit quality. S&P also placed HEI and its entities on CreditWatch with negative implications, which means the utility’s credit rating could be further downgraded in the near future.

New York CNN —At long last, the White House and House Republicans have reached a tentative agreement to raise the debt ceiling. Every day that passes without a bill to raise the debt ceiling, the probability of the United States reaching the critical date that it can no longer meet its financial obligations steadily grows. Absent a bill passed by Congress and signed by Biden, Treasury will likely do everything in its power to avoid a debt default. In contrast to debt payments, government payments like Social Security or federal worker salaries aren’t considered debt instruments, so they are less likely to come into play when the agencies rate the United States’ debt. Though prioritizing debt payments might stave off an even-greater economic collapse, the United States may not emerge unscathed.
