Where Have All the Chinese I.P.O.s Gone?
  + stars: | 2024-06-25 | by ( Meaghan Tobin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There was a time when a Chinese internet company’s initial public offering was the hottest thing on Wall Street. Scores of other Chinese companies raised billions in the United States over the next few years. Wall Street has not seen anything close to a blockbuster Chinese I.P.O. So far this year, Chinese companies have raised about $580 million in U.S. listings, almost all of it last month from one I.P.O. As the geopolitical relationship between China and the United States has deteriorated, it has become increasingly difficult for Chinese companies to find a foreign market where a listing might not be jeopardized by political scrutiny.

On Tuesday, a capsule carrying soil from the far side of the moon will parachute into the desert in China’s Inner Mongolia region. The sample, retrieved by the Chinese National Space Administration’s Chang’e-6 lander, is expected to be the latest accomplishment in a series of near-flawless executions of Chinese lunar exploration missions since 2007. Here’s what you need to know about the Chang’e-6 mission’s return to Earth. China’s space agency has yet to confirm when the mission will conclude. But according to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, the Chang’e-6 sample return capsule is expected to land at 1:41 a.m. Eastern time, which is 1:41 p.m. local time in the Siziwang Banner area of Inner Mongolia, a region in northern China.

Opinion | Should Social Media Come With Warning Labels?
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
To the Editor:Re “Social Media Platforms Need a Health Warning,” by Vivek H. Murthy, the U.S. surgeon general (Opinion guest essay, June 18):Dr. Murthy makes a compelling case for social media warning labels and offers parents sound suggestions for protecting their kids from toxic content. An entire generation of children is growing up watching their parents, older siblings and other family members glued to their phones, posting pictures, sharing memes, debating politics and doomscrolling day and night as life passes them by. Consistently modeling the behavior they’d like to see in their kids would circumvent even the most powerful algorithms and make parents the ultimate social media influencers. The writer is president and C.E.O. of the Family and Children’s Association.

Apple is imposing unfair restrictions on developers of applications for its App Store in violation of a new European Union law meant to encourage competition in the tech industry, regulators in Brussels said on Monday. The charges further escalated a tussle between Apple, which says its products are designed in the best interest of customers, and E.U. regulators, who say the company is unfairly using its size and considerable resources to stifle competition. Apple is the first company to be charged for violating the Digital Markets Act, a law passed in 2022 that gives European regulators wide authority to force the largest “online gatekeepers” to change their business practices. regulators said Apple was putting unlawful restrictions on companies that make games, music services and other applications.

Starting Monday, the Minneapolis-based discounter said companies that work with Shopify can apply to join Target Plus, its third-party marketplace. Target's marketplace creates a "halo" and is "an accelerant to the total business," she said. Target Plus has only a tiny fraction of the revenue and sellers of other third-party marketplaces. Sylvester would not say how much of that came from ads bought by Target Plus sellers. Target does not offer fulfillment services, instead relying on Target Plus sellers to store, pack and ship their own goods.

Just days after the body of Fahim Saleh, a successful tech entrepreneur, was found dismembered in his luxury condomiumium in Manhattan in July 2020, his former personal assistant, Tyrese Haspil, made a series of unsettling web searches. “Fahim Saleh.” “Murder of tech C.E.O. in New York.” “Dismembered body.”The search queries were just some of the chilling details that emerged during Mr. Haspil’s murder trial this month in Manhattan Criminal Court. And on Monday jurors convicted him of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from Mr. Saleh — and then killing him and cutting up his body in an effort to conceal what he had done. Mr. Haspil, 25, of Brookyn, is expected to be sentenced on Sept. 10.

When the White House chief of staff, Jeffrey Zients, met with dozens of top executives in Washington this month, he encountered a familiar list of corporate complaints about President Biden. The executives at the Business Roundtable, a group representing some of the country’s biggest corporations, objected to Mr. Biden’s proposals to raise taxes. While the meeting was not antagonistic, it was indicative of three and a half years of executive grousing about Mr. Biden. Business leaders have criticized his remarks on “corporate greed” and his appearance on a union picket line. A number of prominent figures in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street — including the venture capitalists David Sacks and Marc Andreessen, and the hedge fund magnate Kenneth Griffin — have grown increasingly vocal in their criticism of Mr. Biden, their praise of former President Donald J. Trump, or both.

In European Parliament elections this month, voters in most of the European Union’s 27 countries rallied to parties that hold the union in contempt. Analysts have leaped to the conclusion that the European Union must have done something wrong. In Germany, where a hard-right party anchored in the formerly Communist East got more votes than any of the three governing parties, voters cited highhanded energy policies. But the European Union’s governing machinery in Brussels is never where voters’ hearts and hopes are. The union is looking more and more like one of those 19th- and 20th-century projects to universalize the un-universalizable, like Esperanto.

Sure enough, the next day began a historic ascent of Apple stock, an in-your-face rally that many thought made no sense. There's a coalescence of two themes, high speed, accelerated computing and increasingly intelligent AI, and neither works without Nvidia chips.
