With OceanGate closed for business, the market for Titanic sub tourism appeared to slam shut. One leading sub operator, eager to demonstrate that the Titan sub failed to live up to the industry standards that can make trips to the ocean floor relatively safe, is already planning its own journey to the wreckage of the Titanic, where Titan was headed before it collapsed. But in its pursuit of “increasing access to the deep ocean through innovation,” OceanGate frequently skirted regulations and pushed back against industry standards. 2) OceanGate’s sub designs were so experimental, no other commercial sub operation would ever replicate them. “The deep ocean is no place for compromise,” Triton said in its statement.

“Is this a political war to the knife?”I was not familiar with that term – “war to the knife” – but Bannon also recently used it in an interview with ex-Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Ousted from White House role in 2017Bannon’s tenure in Trump’s White House was relatively short; he was fired in August 2017, part of a major reorganization under then-chief of staff John Kelly, who was brought in to control a chaotic atmosphere. As chief strategist at the White House, Bannon was known for large whiteboards full of lists of priorities – things that still ring true in the priorities he outlined over the weekend. Courts, Congress and mismanagement kept Bannon and Trump from achieving many of these goals in Trump’s first term. Anticipating the potential for a second Trump term, there are any number of supporters who are mapping out how to make the most of it.

Adobe is having a terrible month

On Monday, the Department of Justice sued, saying Adobe violated consumer protection laws by hiding expensive fees and making it difficult to cancel subscriptions. Regulators said in the complaint that Adobe entices people to "enroll in its default, most lucrative subscription plan without clearly disclosing important plan terms." Earlier this month, the tech giant asked users to sign new terms with language that some thought implied that their content could be reproduced, displayed, or modified by Adobe — a big concern since Adobe is pushing hard into generative AI. AdvertisementThe news even frustrated Adobe employees, who complained internally about the company's poor communication, Business Insider reported last week. "Pretending that this wasn't intentional only makes Adobe and its employees look even more pathetic," said Sasha Yanshin on X. Yanshin said that he canceled his Adobe subscription after many years as a customer.

A United States Secret Service agent was robbed at gunpoint in Southern California over the weekend, on the same night that President Joe Biden was in Los Angeles for a re-election fund-raiser, the authorities said on Monday. Upon arriving at the development — a former military base — the police discovered that the victim was a Secret Service agent whose bag had been stolen at gunpoint, the statement said. During the robbery, an agent fired a gun, the police added. The suspected robbery occurred on the same night that Mr. Biden was in downtown Los Angeles for a star-studded re-election fund-raiser with former President Barack Obama. Celebrities including George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Barbra Streisand attended the gala, which the Biden campaign said raised at least $28 million.

A heat wave is bearing down on large parts of America, forcing emergency workers to prepare for what could be record-breaking numbers of people in heat distress. An excessive heat watch was in effect for southern New England, where forecasters warned of dangerous heat and humidity starting on Tuesday and lasting through Friday. It’s the first severe heat wave of the year for that part of the country. Beijing has launched an anti-dumping investigation aimed at certain pork products from the European Union, days after the Brussels raised tariffs on Chinese vehicles. China's Ministry of Commerce announced Monday it had opened an investigation into imported pork and its by-products originating from the EU, including pork offal, pig fat, pig intestines, bladders, and stomachs. The investigation is expected to conclude within 12 months, though it could be extended for a further six months, the ministry said. The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China said the EU pork investigation was Beijing's retaliation for recent tariffs on Chinese EVs. In response to questions, a Chinese commerce ministry official said the probe was first initiated by a formal complaint by a domestic industry group, the China Animal Agriculture Association.

A Ukrainian reporter who revealed that a state news agency tried to bar interviews with opposition politicians said he received a draft notification the next day. Ukraine’s domestic spy agency spied on staff members of an investigative news outlet through peepholes in their hotel rooms. Journalists and groups monitoring press freedoms are raising alarms over what they say are increasing restrictions and pressures on the media in Ukraine under the government of President Volodymyr Zelensky that go well beyond the country’s wartime needs. “It’s really disturbing,” said Oksana Romanyuk, director of the Institute of Mass Information, a nonprofit that monitors media freedoms. That is particularly true, she said, in a war where Ukraine is “fighting for democracy against the values of dictatorship embodied by Russia.”

Ties between Russia and North Korea have deepened in recent years with the countries — which are both heavily sanctioned by the West — hailing their strategic cooperation in the spheres of defense and trade. North Korea has not been shy in its outpourings of reverence for Putin, describing him as a "comrade-in-arms" in the battle against what both countries see as Western hegemony. Analysts say the deepening relationship between Russia and "rogue" state North Korea is increasingly hazardous for the West. This aspect of the relationship not only destabilizes security on the peninsula and in Asia; it also heightens the direct threat posed by North Korea to the [U.S.] homeland." It is unclear what further strategic cooperation between North Korea and Russia could entail.

Mr. Thaksin is the most high-profile figure to be charged with violating the royal defamation law, which is one of the world’s harshest. He posted bail of about $14,000, according to Thailand’s court of justice, but the case could drag on for months. It allowed Mr. Thaksin to enter the country last year after 15 years of self-exile and effectively partnered with him — a longtime opponent — to prevent a new challenger from rising to power. Now, analysts say, it has used the threat of legal action against Mr. Thaksin, 74, to keep a check on his political ambitions. Although Mr. Thaksin does not have a formal position in the current government, he is widely regarded to have powerful influence over the governing coalition, which is led by his political party, the Pheu Thai Party.

US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy is recommending a warning label on social media sites cautioning that "social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents." This label would warn teens and their parents of the potential risk of harm from using social media. But is social media really comparable to cigarettes? So far, the government's approach to social media regulation has been somewhat chaotic. A surgeon general warning label that pops up when you open Instagram is probably going to be annoying, but it can't really hurt.

There won’t be a trial anytime soon — or maybe ever — for Donald Trump on charges related to Jan. 6. If Mr. Trump is elected, there might not be a trial at all. One of the things a trial gives you is an answer: There is an ending to a trial. But on some level even a hung jury provides an answer: Here is tangible evidence of a societal inability to resolve this issue. There won’t even be an ending like that to Jan. 6, and if you think about it, there still isn’t a clean separation between the event and the politics of 2024.

Amazon Union Workers Join Forces With the Teamsters

After years of organizing Amazon workers and pressuring the company to bargain over wages and working conditions, two prominent unions are teaming up to challenge the online retailer. The partnership was made final in voting that ended on Monday after members of the Amazon Labor Union, the only union formally representing Amazon warehouse workers in the United States, voted overwhelmingly to affiliate with the 1.3-million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The vote was overseen by the Amazon union. Leaders of both unions said the affiliation agreement would put them in a better position to challenge Amazon and would provide the A.L.U. will fight fearlessly to ensure Amazon workers secure the good jobs and safe working conditions they deserve in a union contract,” Sean O’Brien, the Teamsters president, said in a statement early Tuesday.

isn't the first question I ask a date but it's high on my list if I'm considering an actual relationship. But I have to ask about pensions to really find out where our future is heading as a couple. I ended it and truly hope he put that flower money toward a pension. So when I'm asking if a guy has a pension, what I'm really asking is: "Are you thinking about the future or just about enjoying today?" But, to me, I can enjoy the present more if it's not ruined by worrying about what will happen later if I don't have money.
