I talked to Samuel Freedman, a Columbia Journalism School professor, about his recent book about Humphrey and the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. The book’s title, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” is taken from a line in Humphrey’s rousing speech on civil rights. In 1968, the Democratic Party was operating under old rules in which primary voters actually had relatively little direct effect on delegates. When Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats bolted from the Democratic Party in 1948, that’s the beginning of the vast majority of the White South becoming Republicans, stepping away from the Democratic Party. Show me a major Republican politician in the MAGA movement who is a fervent supporter of civil rights legislation.

It was May 2021, and Donald J. Trump was wounded. He told Mr. Trump he wanted to write a book, not about the unpleasantness of the previous four years, but about that prelapsarian period before Mr. Trump entered politics. Mr. Trump was sold. “He was at his lowest then,” Mr. Setoodeh, 42, said over lunch in Manhattan’s West Village on Friday. “You’ll sell 10,000 books at one rally,” he told Mr. Setoodeh.

Trump will make two appearances today, first addressing the evangelical Faith and Freedom Coalition in Washington, D.C., before holding a campaign rally in Philadelphia. President Biden is at Camp David, the presidential country retreat, for the weekend. The presidential campaign is entering a crucial phase. Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump will face off in an unusually early debate on CNN on Thursday as polls reflect a tightening race. FiveThirtyEight’s aggregate of national polls show Mr. Biden very slightly ahead of Mr. Trump for the first time since recording began in March, while its election forecast shows the outcome of the race as effectively a coin flip.

On Monday, the federal judge overseeing the case will hold a hearing for both parties to present their arguments over the proposed gag order, and tensions between the two sides could quickly rise. Citing Trump’s continued mischaracterization of the FBI’s policy in place around the use of deadly force during the search, prosecutors say Trump’s false claims that he nearly escaped death from federal agents could lead to threats and harassment against them. Trump was in New York when agents searched the Florida estate. “Shortly after the execution of the search warrant at Mar-a-Lago, one of Trump’s supporters carried out an armed attack on an FBI office in the wake of Trump’s Truth Social statements regarding the search,” prosecutors wrote. Donald Trump and Joe Biden come into Thursday’s presidential debate as incredibly well-known quantities defined by shared unpopularity and competing weaknesses. But their most important liabilities — for the incumbent, his decrepitude and his record on inflation; for the challenger, an unfitness distilled and confirmed by the events of Jan. 6 — feel too well known to be worth discussing further until we see what happens on the stage. Maybe Biden’s entire campaign will implode when he answers a question about inflation with a Grandpa Simpson ramble about the price of a frozen custard on Rehoboth Beach in 1968. Maybe Trump will turn into Colonel Jessep under Jake Tapper’s questioning and claim full responsibility for the 2021 riot at the Capitol. But before the two men meet with those or other destinies, it’s worth giving some space to their crucial secondary weaknesses, the places where each candidate’s support might be undermined among those “double-hater” voters who regard each candidate’s primary liabilities as canceling the other’s out.

CNN —The US Secret Service on Friday laid out the security measures for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next month, including a perimeter that will prevent protesters from gathering at a large park near the venue. The RNC convention will take place at the Fiserv Forum, upper right, just a few blocks northwest of Pere Marquette Park in Milwaukee, as seen on May 14, 2024. Mike De Sisti/The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/USA Today NetworkFriday’s announcement comes after a monthslong dispute between the Secret Service and the GOP over security measures around the convention, which will take place from July 15 to 18. The party had accused the agency of ignoring its concerns, while the Secret Service said Republicans were undermining efforts to keep the event safe. In April, Republican National Committee counsel Todd Steggerda sent a letter asking the Secret Service to keep protesters farther back from the convention than what had been planned at the time.

Multiple times each day, President Biden dials up Mike Donilon, a close adviser since the 1980s, to chew on the latest polls and headlines. What do you think?” Mr. Biden will ask Mr. Donilon, who recently left the White House for the campaign’s Delaware headquarters. Once a week, Mr. Biden summons Ron Klain, his former chief of staff, to workshop the best attacks to use against former President Donald J. Trump as the presidential debate draws closer. When he leaves for Delaware on weekends, Mr. Biden seeks out Ted Kaufman, a confidant who represents the president’s ties to the state that introduced him to the national stage more than a half-century ago. It was Mr. Kaufman who was brutally direct with Mr. Biden when a plagiarism scandal threatened his first campaign for president in 1987.

Trump will address a gathering of Christian conservatives Saturday afternoon in Washington, DC, before traveling to Philadelphia for a more traditional campaign rally in a key battleground. Trump’s campaign is relishing the juxtaposition of the two candidates’ preparation styles. “While Joe Biden’s advisors force him to hide away at Camp David for some much-needed rest, President Trump is keeping up with his busy campaign schedule,” Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said. The Biden campaign slammed Trump’s appearance at the Washington event as proof of where he stands on the issue. The Trump campaign has sought to drive a wedge between Biden and his birth state by hammering the president over inflation and crime.

Read previewAcross the United States, scores of construction sites are emblazoned with signs that read: "Project Funded By President Joe Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law." For many people, it's an innocuous notation of the thousands of projects financed by the sweeping $1.2 trillion infrastructure law Biden signed into law in 2021 and was backed by both Democrats and a sizable contingent of Republicans. Cruz, in the letter, then argues that Biden "unilaterally rebranded" the bipartisan infrastructure law as "President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law," which passed the House by 228-206 votes and the Senate by 69-30 votes. "Congress, not President Biden, wrote [the infrastructure law], and it did not do so to aid the President's reelection campaign." The law provided federal funding for long-awaited upgrades for bridges and tunnels, highways, and rail infrastructure, among other projects.

They offered three pieces of Stoic advice for handling the anxiety of this year’s election. Many Stoic leaders would never be labeled as “idiotai.” They were passionately involved in politics and the pursuit of justice. Holiday says Aurelius wrote constantly about justice in his classic book, “Meditations.”Epictetus, the ancient Greek Stoic and philosopher. AdvertisementBut similar to most national polls, Trump leads Biden on the question of which candidate would better handle the economy. In 2020, Biden won Pennsylvania by roughly 80,000 votes out of more than 6.9 million ballots cast. And over 604,000 of those ballots cast for Biden came from Philadelphia voters. He can easily find himself among receptive audiences in the city's numerous Black churches, where a loyal base of older Black voters are overwhelmingly supporting his bid for a second term. To the Editor:Re “Biden Practices and Trump Improvises in Run-Up to Revamped Debate” (news article, June 17):There is one question that I hope President Biden gets to ask the former president at Thursday’s debate. For the last four years, Donald Trump has told anyone and everyone who would listen that the 2020 election was stolen from him. The man in charge of the federal government at the time, the most powerful man in the nation and the world, was Mr. Trump. How did a man out of power rig the federal election so as to win by more than seven million votes in the popular vote as well as defeat Mr. Trump in the Electoral College? Allies of former President Donald J. Trump charged in a sweeping Arizona election case on Friday began filing what is expected to be a series of challenges, seizing on a new state law aimed at curbing litigation and prosecutions involving political figures. The law was originally crafted by Kory Langhofer, a Phoenix lawyer who worked for the Trump campaign during the 2020 election but who subsequently fell out of favor with the former president. He said the 2022 law’s intent was to limit politically motivated prosecutions on both sides of the aisle. The new challenges could have the effect of delaying the election case in Arizona for several months, given the timeline for decisions and appeals. The case was brought in April by the state attorney general, Kris Mayes, a Democrat.

Former President Donald J. Trump’s defense team tried on Friday to persuade the judge overseeing the national security documents case to dismiss the indictment, pushing a long-shot argument that the special counsel, Jack Smith, was not properly appointed. Such defense motions are routinely denied in federal cases involving special counsels. But the judge presiding over this case, Aileen M. Cannon, has given Mr. Trump’s request extra import by holding hearings and allowing three outside lawyers time in court to make additional arguments about whether there is a constitutional mechanism for naming special counsels. “The text of these statutes really matters,” said Emil Bove, one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers. He also argued that Mr. Smith should have been confirmed by the Senate because his position is so powerful.

Prosecutors in Manhattan said on Friday that a judge should extend major elements of a gag order that was placed on Donald J. Trump, citing dozens of death threats made to District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg and other officials. The order, issued before Mr. Trump’s Manhattan criminal trial began in mid-April, bars him from attacking witnesses, jurors, court staff and members of the family of the judge who presided over the trial, Juan M. Merchan. It does not prohibit Mr. Trump from criticizing Mr. Bragg, Justice Merchan or the trial itself. In a 19-page filing on Friday, prosecutors argued that Justice Merchan no longer needed to enforce the portion of the gag order relating to trial witnesses, but they said he should keep in place the provisions protecting jurors, prosecutors, court staff and their families. The New York Police Department has logged 56 “actionable threats” since the beginning of April directed against Mr. Bragg, his family and staff members in his office, according to an affidavit provided with the filing.

CNN —Donald Trump’s conviction in his criminal hush money trial last month led to the two largest single days of fundraising for his White House campaign this cycle, newly released campaign finance reports show. On May 30 and May 31 — the day of the conviction and the day after — at least $27 million in itemized contributions flowed into the former president’s main campaign committee, according to a CNN analysis of donors giving at least $200 over the cycle. Prior to the conviction, the two largest fundraising days were following Trump’s indictment in the hush money case in Manhattan in early April 2023 — his first indictment — and his booking into the Fulton County jail in late August for charges in the Georgia 2020 election subversion case. But each of those days brought in daily itemized contributions closer to $1.3 million, less than a tenth of the nearly $15 million that flowed into the campaign on May 30 of this year, the records show.
