A CBS News interview destroyed any chance that Kevin McCarthy had in keeping his job as speaker. But ahead of the vote, McCarthy said that he wasn't entertaining any major concessions from the minority party. After Democratic leaders showed the "Face the Nation" interview to members on Tuesday, McCarthy's remarks angered members from across the party's ideological spectrum. "After I saw Kevin McCarthy's interview with Margaret Brennan, all magnanimity left my body," he told Punchbowl News on Tuesday.

A look at the eight Republicans who voted to remove McCarthy from office, against the overwhelming wishes of their colleagues. REP. ANDY BIGGSBiggs is serving his fourth term in the House representing a strongly Republican-leaning district in Arizona. Rep. Greene went after fellow Rep. Matt Gaetz over the conservative push to impeach President Biden. Gaetz on Tuesday said that he "pushed" McCarthy for weeks regarding an impeachment inquiry. The decision comes as the California Republican has faced mounting pressure over the issue from many members of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus, who hold immense sway in the narrow Republican House majority. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe White House on Tuesday immediately pushed back against GOP efforts to start an impeachment inquiry. "This is the same guy that wrote a book called 'Drain the Swamp', who is now arguing against an impeachment inquiry," she told the network.

That’s why, today, I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden,” McCarthy said. The confrontation could trigger a government shutdown in the coming months – a potential political headache for McCarthy heading into an election year. So even if he wanted to initiate impeachment against Biden to save himself, McCarthy may not have the power to do it. It’s often been impossible to see a clear path ahead in which McCarthy can appease competing political forces with the minuscule majority Republicans secured in last year’s midterm elections. Ahead of an autumn that could turn into a political migraine for McCarthy, he is back in a familiar position.

Trump's allies and enemies took to Twitter en masse to weigh in on his second indictment. The common refrain from Democrats and Trump's opponents within the GOP was that nobody was above the law. Reaction: Biden, McCarthy debt ceiling deal

WASHINGTON, May 27 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden and top congressional Republican Kevin McCarthy have reached a tentative deal to raise the federal government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, ending a months-long stalemate. DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVE TED LIU"Tonight, I have been informed that there is an agreement in principle between the White House and House Republicans. This was a House Republican manufactured crisis. REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE BOB GOOD "I am hearing the 'deal' is for a $4 trillion increase in the debt limit. "If we didn't reach a deal … the average American person would clearly see a hit ... we had to reach some kind of conclusion here."
GOP Rep. Garret Graves told reporters that debt ceiling negotiations are on "pause." He said the White House is bringing "unreasonable" requests. Still, there's a major time crunch for Congress to reach a deal to raise the debt ceiling before a default. But it's unclear where the negotiations will go from here — when asked if talks will resume today, White House negotiators told reporters that they're "playing [it] by ear." It is past time for the White House to get serious.
The purported tweet (bit.ly/3ZeMnPE) reads: “Listen, it’s not my job to speak out everytime a Republican congressperson calls for Civil War or giving slavery another shot. It’s simply not my job.” The image shows a picture of McCarthy in the top left corner and his real Twitter handle, @SpeakerMcCarthy. The fake screenshot (bit.ly/3ZeMnPE) was originally posted by satirical Twitter account @FaithRubPol (www.twitter.com/FaithRubPol), but has since been deleted for “violating Twitter rules” (here). One person called McCarthy a “spineless coward” (bit.ly/41pnxyr), while another said, “Someone needs to explain to Kevin his job duties” (bit.ly/3ZeAzN3). The tweet was not posted by Kevin McCarthy; it stems from a satirical account.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., effusively praised Twitter owner Elon Musk Wednesday for "being transparent" about the tech platform. "God bless Elon Musk," Comer said in an interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box." Comer's comments came just days after Musk visited Washington and met with House Republican leaders for over an hour, a group that included Comer. So while McCarthy and Republicans met with Musk for over an hour, Jeffries literally just "met" him. WATCH: Elon Musk polls Twitter users over whether he should remain as CEO
Elon Musk said he met with House leaders of both parties to ensure fairness on Twitter. The meeting was reportedly unplanned, and was "mostly just an introduction." The meetings come just as the House is set to hold a hearing about Twitter's content moderation before the 2020 election. Musk tweeted after the meeting: "Just met with @SpeakerMcCarthy & @RepJeffries to discuss ensuring that this platform is fair to both parties." Jeffries was reportedly in a meeting in Speaker McCarthy's office when Musk came in.
