CNN —The Oscars of the food world — the James Beard Awards — were handed out Monday night to many chefs and restaurants reflecting cultures and regions that have long been overlooked when honoring culinary achievement in the United States. Outstanding Chef winner Michael Rafidi dedicated his award to Palestinian people all over the world in his acceptance speech. The 2024 winners bring heritage from all over the globe — the Philippines, Mexico, Japan, Peru, Vietnam, Senegal — to tables across the United States. This year’s awards also bring recognition to restaurants in many smaller towns and states that have not historically been recognized with James Beard Awards. Chef Masako Morishita received the James Beard Award for Emerging Chef.

A new Zillow and StreetEasy analysis finds that rental price growth is far outpacing wage growth in most big cities — and New Yorkers are particularly screwed. In New York City, rents increased seven times as fast as wages from 2022 to 2023. Similarly, renters in Boston, Cincinnati, and Buffalo are seeing their wage growth dwarfed by their rent increases. But it's not all bad news for prospective and current tenants: There are still a handful of cities where wage growth has outpaced rent increases. While wages rose by 5.5% between 2022 and 2023, rents increased by just 0.8%, the Zillow/StreetEasy report found.

For Mother’s Day, The Times asked readers to tell us about the mother figures in their lives. KELLY SANDOVAL, 48, SQUAMISH, B.C., CANADAI come from a multicultural background, but the Puerto Rican side of the family lived far away. When I showed up, Linda, my host mother, picked me up from the bus stop and made me tea and crumpets. If I had a nightmare and woke my mother up, she would tell me to climb into bed with Rita. During that year I also moved into my first apartment, away from the guidance of my mother.

Here’s a look at some of the pro-Palestinian campus protests around the world. AustraliaOver the past few weeks, pro-Palestinian protest camps have appeared in at least seven universities across Australia. FranceIn Paris, pro-Palestinian protests erupted at the Sciences Po university and the Sorbonne university in late April. At McGill University in downtown Montreal, pro-Palestinian student protesters have set up an encampment on the front lawn. On May 2, a Quebec Superior Court judge rejected an injunction request that would have forced the pro-Palestinian protesters to leave their encampment.

College Democrats of America, the student organization of the Democratic Party, endorsed pro-Palestinian campus protests on Tuesday and called on President Biden to support a permanent cease-fire in Gaza. In a statement approved by the organization’s executive board by a vote of 8 to 2, the College Democrats praised student protesters for having “the moral clarity to see this war for what it is: destructive, genocidal and unjust,” and condemned college administrators for suspending and calling in the police to arrest them. The statement came after two tumultuous weeks in which pro-Palestinian protests spread to campuses across the country in the wake of a police crackdown at Columbia University. Overnight from Monday into Tuesday, protesters at Columbia took over a building on campus. Protesters have escalated similarly at two other colleges, Portland State University and California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt.

Overnight from Monday into Tuesday, protesters at Columbia took over a building on campus. “As College Democrats, we are committed to the re-election of President Biden and Democrats across down-ballot races in every corner of our nation,” the statement said. “We’re realizing that our duty as College Democrats is to be representatives of college students to the party, rather than vice versa,” Mr. Muralitharan said. “Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest,” protesters at Columbia and universities across the country have chanted. Student protesters who oppose Israel’s military action in Gaza are demanding that their universities sell investments in companies with ties to Israel. Pro-Palestinian protesters say divestment would send an important message of disapproval of Israel’s conduct in Gaza. But while demonstrators have spread their messages across the country, many schools haven’t acquiesced to protesters’ calls for divestment. There are historical precedents for university divestment.

College Democrats of America, the student organization of the Democratic Party, endorsed pro-Palestinian campus protests on Tuesday and called on President Biden to support a permanent cease-fire in Gaza. These movers are disproportionately higher-income, a new Bank of America report found. Las Vegas and Phoenix are the only Western cities Bank of America analyzed that had population increases compared to first quarter 2020. Housing costs are a major reason people are leaving West Coast cities for the Sunbelt. But many Sunbelt cities have more permissive land-use and zoning regulations than their coastal counterparts, meaning they're often better equipped to keep up with rising demand by building more homes. Both West Coast and Sunbelt cities that aggressively restrict housing construction will likely continue to face affordability crises.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Several elected leaders in Oregon declared a state of emergency on Tuesday for downtown Portland over the public health and public safety crisis fueled by fentanyl. The declaration is a recommendation from a governor-established task force that met for several months last year to determine ways to rejuvenate downtown Portland. The effort also extends the Portland Police Bureau’s partnership with Oregon State Police to jointly patrol downtown streets for fentanyl sales. At the state level, Oregon lawmakers have introduced a new bill that would undo a key part of the state’s drug decriminalization law. Public opinion has soured on it as public drug use has become more visible because of growing homelessness.

By Daniel Trotta(Reuters) - A downed power line electrocuted three people to death in Oregon after falling onto a vehicle on Wednesday but a baby in diapers survived after a witness retrieved the child from the scene, Portland fire officials said. A fallen tree branch brought the power line onto the top of an SUV, said Rick Graves, a spokesperson for Portland Fire and Rescue who was at the scene. Callers told dispatchers of at least one person and maybe the car on fire, victims lying prostrate, and a loose baby, Graves said. KGW television reported that a neighbor plucked the baby from the arms of one of the bodies before paramedics arrived. I have to get this baby,'" said the neighbor, who asked to remain unidentified, KGW reported.
