Taipei/Hong Kong CNN —Nvidia and AMD have separately launched the next generation of their artificial intelligence (AI) chips in Taiwan, as a three-way race with Intel heats up. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia (NVDA), said Sunday that the company would roll out its most advanced AI chip platform, called Rubin, in 2026. The Rubin platform will succeed the Blackwell, which supplies chips for data centers and was announced only in March. But competition is growing, with major competitors AMD (AMD) and Intel (INTC) introducing new products in an effort to challenge Nvidia’s dominance. The new chip will succeed the MI300 and feature more memory, faster memory bandwidth and better computer performance, Su added.

According to the CCP's plan, by 2020, China was supposed to have "achieved iconic advances in AI models and methods, core devices, high-end equipment, and foundational software." Censorship requirements may slow China's AI development and limit the commercialization of domestic models, but they will not stop Beijing from benefiting from AI where it sees fit. We're not seeing a huge gap between the models Chinese companies have been able to roll out. The current price war is a race to the bottom, similar to what we've seen in the Chinese technology space before. A race to the bottom may simply beggar China's AI ecosystem.

STMicroelectronics has committed 5 billion euros ($5.4 billion) of investment in what it calls the world's first fully integrated Silicon Carbide (SiC) plant in Italy. The project is backed by 2 billion euros from the Italian state, and is the result of the EU's Chips Act which aims to provide support for Europe's chip industry. The European Commission on Friday approved Italian state aid for STMicroelectronics to build a 5 billion euro ($5.4 billion) microchip plant as Europe battles to reduce reliance on Asian imports for vital manufacturing components. The STMicro plant will produce chips made from silicon carbide, which is more energy-efficient than standard silicon. STMicro is the largest maker of silicon carbide chips, which are more expensive to manufacture than regular silicon chips but favoured by automakers because they are energy-efficient, lightweight and tough.

Read previewNvidia cofounder and CEO Jensen Huang is in Taiwan this week, where he's getting rockstar reception and boosting the stock market. The drills started on Thursday, but Taiwan's stock market was little changed over the period. "In this case, the AI equity theme, physical investment in AI, and the wider upturn in electronic component demand are driving robust Taiwanese growth and the strong stock market performance," wrote Green. He added that an outright invasion of Taiwan by China is "very unlikely" due to high military and economic risk. "If the macro backdrop is positive and China remains far from achieving 'fortress-like' economic conditions, future sell-offs may offer attractive buying opportunities," Green wrote.

After the first sign this week of potential profit taking in Nvidia (NVDA) since it's monster post-earning pop, now might be the time to hedge for further downside in the semiconductor space. "We definitely look forward to engaging in a constructive dialogue with Elliott," Ilan said at AllianceBernstein's Strategic Decisions conference, marking his first public remarks since the activist revealed a $2.5 billion position in the company. Texas Instruments has spent heavily on chip fabrication plants, or fabs, as it seeks to maintain its dominant position in the analog semiconductor market. But that growth in capex has come at a significant cost to free cash flow per share, a self-declared key metric for TI, Elliott noted. By Elliott's analysis, FCF per share fell from $6.40 in 2022 to $1.47 per share in 2023. But it remains a giant business, accounting for $13 billion or 74% of TI's revenue in 2023.
