Jeff Greenberg | Universal Images Group | Getty ImagesIn a lyric on her latest album, Beyoncé sings "denim on denim, on denim, on denim." Levi Strauss executives are ecstatic. Western wear is booming as consumers opt for top-to-bottom denim looks, the iconic, 171-year-old clothing maker said on Wednesday. Sales of denim skirts, jumpsuits and dresses all at least doubled in the latest quarter, Gass said. On the other hand, Levi Strauss earned 16 cents per share, excluding items, ahead of the 11-cent average estimate by analysts.

In a Wednesday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Levi Strauss CEO Michelle Gass said the popularity of "top-to-bottom" denim outfits is growing. "Our new focus is, yes, continuing to own jeans, but taking that denim top to bottom," she said. Besides the "head-to-toe denim lifestyle," Gass added other trends like baggier and looser items are on the rise. She said that much of this quarter's success came from the direct-to-consumer business and the women's category. "We see our consumers as being really resilient, and we're excited about the [denim] category," she said.

The jeans creator on Wednesday posted fiscal second quarter revenue that fell just short of Wall Street's expectations at a time when shoppers are stocking their wardrobes with denim dresses, skirts and ultra-low-rise baggy pants. It's not clear how sales at Docker's were affected by the timing of Levi's wholesale orders. The changes are necessary because nearly half of Levi's sales these days are coming from its own website and stores. During the quarter, wholesale revenue grew 7%, but excluding the shift in timing of wholesale orders, sales in the channel decreased 4%. Singh noted that wholesale revenue improved on a sequential basis, but the company has a "conservative" view of the channel's growth moving forward.

CNN —A strange monolith found jutting out of the rocks in a remote mountain range near Las Vegas has been taken down by authorities. Members of the Las Vegas police search and rescue team found the object near Gass Peak, part of the vast Desert National Wildlife Refuge where bighorn sheep and desert tortoises can be found roaming. Then came sightings in Romania, central California, New Mexico and on the famed Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas. Fish and Wildlife Service, is the largest wildlife refuge outside of Alaska and can cover the state of Rhode Island twice. The department said it “discourages anyone from venturing off marked trails or leaving objects and items behind.”“This poses a danger to you and the environment,” Las Vegas police said.

CNN —Another “mysterious” monolith has been spotted. This time, on a Las Vegas hiking trail in Nevada, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). “How did it get up there?”The monolith was found over the weekend near Gass Peak north of Las Vegas, it added. The pillar is reminiscent to ones popping up all over the world shortly after a 10-feet silver monolith was discovered in late 2020 by a helicopter crew flying over an Utah desert. As for the one found on the Las Vegas hiking trail, social media users claimed the monolith isn’t actually new.

Arkhouse then launched its proxy fight and put forward nine nominees to Macy's 15-person board. Turning the tideOther department store chains have faced challenges from activists in recent years, and even when those efforts fall short, the pressure can bring about sweeping changes. That includes Macy's locations with stronger sales as well as its two chains that have outperformed the namesake brand, higher-end department store chain Bloomingdale's and beauty chain Bluemercury. Arkhouse claims Macy's refused to engage with it, and Macy's rebuffed Arkhouse saying it didn't have the financing for the takeover it proposed. Arkhouse, for its part, has said it plans to keep Macy's stores open.

Excluding one-time costs related to Levi's restructuring, the company reported earnings per share of 26 cents, ahead of Wall Street's estimates. The sales slump was primarily attributed to a shift in Levi's wholesale orders, which boosted profits by about $100 million in the year-ago period. For the last couple of years, Levi's has been moving away from wholesalers and doing more of its sales through its own stores and website. If Macy's store closures or other challenges to department stores affects Levi's business, she expects direct-to-consumer sales will offset those losses. During the quarter, sales of items like denim skirts, dresses and tops were up 19% in Levi's direct-to-consumer channel, said Gass.

Levi’s Wants You to Rethink Your Denim Shopping

In the Levi’s store on Market Street in San Francisco, the denim maker’s newly extended collection is on full display. Black denim overalls are paired with a light-blue long-sleeve denim blouse, complemented by a denim cap. The assortment of tops, which Levi’s has been producing at a faster rate than it has in the past, was equal to the store’s inventory of jeans. Ms. Gass, 55, wants to make Levi’s not only a brand you think of when you want jeans, but also a place you go to first when shopping for shirts, jumpsuits and puffer jackets. Her goal is to get customers back more often — since people usually buy tops more frequently than bottoms — and to bring them to Levi’s stores, its website and its mobile app.

Last year, U.S. companies announced 55% more CEO changes than in 2022, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Boards didn't want to make changes, CEOs themselves didn't want to leave. The retail industry in 2023 saw 52 CEO departures, its second-highest number since Challenger, Gray & Christmas started tracking them, and more than double the 21 CEO turnovers in 2022, according to the firm's data. It was below 2019's record 63 CEO departures in the industry. In Korn Ferry's separate analysis of retail CEO turnover in 2023, the executive recruitment firm found 57% of new chief executives named in the industry last year were already working for the company they will lead.

Beyond Yoga's founder Michelle Wahler, along with its Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer Jesse Adams, will both be stepping down. "We have arrived at a natural inflection point for this incredible brand," Levi's incoming CEO Michelle Gass said in a statement. Retailers such as Lululemon and Nike have long dominated the category, with Beyond Yoga and Gap-owned Athleta following close behind. Although he had a tough stance on firing, Bergh said that there were still times when he didn't act quickly enough to remove people who weren't the right fit. Kohl's shares spiked Wednesday as the struggling retailer posted a surprise profit and affirmed its full-year guidance while it chases a turnaround. Kohl's surprise quarterly profit comes after multiple quarters of disappointing sales and a sinking stock price. Since then, Kohl's has tapped its new CEO Kingsbury, former chief executive of off-price retailer Burlington Stores . That contributed to a big loss in Kohl's holiday quarter and weak outlook, which the Wisconsin-based company reiterated Wednesday. During the quarter, Kohl's had its strongest sales performance in February.

Kohl’s had a rough holiday

New York CNN —As consumers pulled back on their holiday spending amid biting inflation, it seems that Kohl’s dropped off many shoppers’ lists. Sales at Kohl’s stores open for at least one year dropped 6.6% during the holiday quarter, the company said Wednesday. Kohl’s comments echo those of other retailers, like Walmart (WMT) and Target (TGT), who have said consumers are strained, although those companies posted stronger holiday results than Kohl’s did. This change in shopping behavior hurts Kohl’s more than big-box rivals because the chain does not sell food, nor as many necessities. In November, Kohl’s chief executive Michelle Gass announced she was leaving the company to become the CEO-in-waiting at Levi’s (LEVI).
Kohl's shares sink after big holiday-quarter losses

Kohl's shares sunk on Wednesday after the retailer posted a big loss and a sales decline of about 7% in the holiday quarter. Kohl's is not the only retailer that has felt a pullback as consumers spend more on food, housing and other necessities. During that same three-year period, spending at Kohl's fell by 15.4% and profit at the company plummeted by 203%. Kohl's inventory remains elevated, up 4% year over year as of the end of the fourth quarter, the company said. As of Tuesday's close, Kohl's stock is up about 11% this year, outperforming the approximately 3% gain of the S&P 500.
The Kohl's logo is displayed on the exterior of a Kohl's store on January 24, 2022 in San Rafael, California. Kohl's on Thursday named interim CEO Tom Kingsbury to the post on a permanent basis. He took over as interim CEO in December after former chief executive Michelle Gass decided to leave for Levi Strauss. "The Board appreciates our constructive dialogue with Macellum during the last few months and their engagement as we conducted the CEO search process. We look forward to their continued support and partnership," said Michael Bender, a board director at Kohl's.
