Tennessee, Texas, and Florida saw the arrival of more one-way U-Haul trucks than any other states in 2020. U-Haul data shows that more people moved to Tennessee than any other state last year amid the coronavirus pandemic. And as a result, Texas and Florida were bumped down to second and third place, respectively. One-way U-Haul users headed to Tennessee increased 12% year-over-year, while trucks leaving increased 9%, according to U-Haul. After the coronavirus-induced national emergency was called in March, the 30 most occupied cities in the US had more U-Haul trucks departing than arriving for the following three months.

The dollar has been helped in January by rising U.S. Treasury yields and some investor caution about the strength of the global economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. Yellen is expected to appear before the Senate Finance Committee later on Tuesday. "Investors were clearly upbeat about the prospect of President-elect (Joe) Biden's $1.9 trillion dollar stimulus proposal," said Boris Schlossberg, managing director, at BK Asset Management in New York. The Wall Street Journal on Monday reported Yellen will affirm a more conventional commitment to market-set currency rates in her Senate testimony on Tuesday. Rising commodity prices in recent months have boosted currencies of countries with large commodity exports, such as Australia and Canada.

WASHINGTON — The Dow Jones Average has increased by more than 10,000 points since outgoing President Donald Trump’s inauguration four years ago. These numbers tell only part of the story of Trump’s presidency, failing to capture the tweets, controversies, Supreme Court nominations and impeachments — plural — during his four years in the Oval Office. But they do help frame the overall economic and financial environment that existed before Trump became president and the one that exists as he leaves office on Jan. 20. Below is a statistical look at Trump’s presidency. The “then” figure is the best-available number for when Trump first took office in 2009.

Expectations go back to the idea of a swift fiscal U.S. stimulus,” said Simon Harvey, senior FX market analyst at Monex Europe in London. With the dollar weakening, the euro gained, rising 0.4% to $1.2121, largely shrugging off the fact that Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s facing a confidence vote to stay in office. The dollar rose 0.2% against the yen to 103.86 yen, still consolidating in a narrow range after hitting a one-month high of 104.40 last week.

The ECB, which kept interest rates steady on Thursday, also pledged to provide more support for the economy if needed. The bank said it plans to raise rates early next year as the economy recovers from the coronavirus pandemic. In midmorning trading, the dollar index fell 0.3% to 90.11, after touching a nearly one-month high of 90.956 on Monday. The greenback also dropped versus currencies tied to commodity prices such as the Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand dollars. That said, Wells Fargo's Nelson thinks the dollar is due for a reversal from its current weak trend in the coming weeks.

Losses in South Korea's KOSPI accelerated in afternoon trade, with the benchmark index sliding as much as 2.7%. "The earlier the BNM cuts, the better it will be to soften the blow to the economy from the worsening pandemic." The ringgit weakened 0.3%, tracking a drop in crude prices, one of Malaysia's top export items. Most other Asian currencies also struggled to make headway as softening U.S. economic data and rising global coronavirus cases lifted the greenback's safe-haven appeal. Philippine shares pared some of its earlier losses to trade 0.5% lower, boosted by few blue chip consumer and real estate stocks.

Stocks in Jakarta fell nearly 2%, while equities elsewhere in Asia also dipped, taking cues from a pause in a stimulus-driven global market rally. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific stocks outside of Japan was down 0.8% after hitting a record high the previous day. Regional currencies dipped as the dollar index regained some footing after three days of declines. Taiwan's dollar once again stood out with gains of more than 1% against the dollar. Blue chip consumer and real estate stocks were the biggest drags on the index.

Sixty-one percent of all voters — but just 21 percent of Republicans — say Biden did win legitimately. And even for the half of Republicans who say they prioritize the GOP generally over allegiance to Trump, his high approval remains unmoved by recent events. Among Republicans who say their primary loyalty is to Trump over the party, 98 percent approve of his performance. (Those findings, however, contrast with a recent Pew poll showing Trump’s job rating declining among Republicans.) An additional 9 percent say Trump is "not as good as most."

The dollar fell close to 7% last year on expectations U.S. monetary policy would stay ultra-loose and amid hopes for a post-pandemic global recovery. “We’ve seen comments from Janet Yellen that she won’t be pursuing a weak dollar policy per se, but that doesn’t mean that the overall impact of Fed policy won’t keep the dollar weakening,” said Michael McCarthy, chief strategist at broker CMC Markets in Sydney. Such large positions suggest that traders would be relatively more inclined to reduce their positions than add to already big bets. The dollar gained 0.3% to 104.05 yen, although still consolidating in a narrow range after reaching a one-month high of 104.40 last week.

The benchmark index was headed for a sixth straight day of losses and a near 3% drop for the week. "Week-to-date, foreign stock investment declined about $70.86 million.. that is the most in over one month," said Daniel Dubrovsky, a strategist at trading firm DailyFX. "Despite currently firmer prices, we continue to advise caution with regard to the Brazilian real," Commerzbank FX and emerging markets analysts Alexandra Bechtel and Melanie Fischinger wrote in a client note. while the withdrawal of its guidance was seen by investors as showing the bank was becoming more data-dependent. Sentiment across global risk markets was lifted as investors bet on more fiscal stimulus from new U.S. President Joe Biden, with a gauge from emerging market stocks hitting a record. An ultra-low interest rate environment, the rollout of coronavirus vaccines and signs of improving economic data have helped boost investor confidence in emerging market risk assets. However, a rise in U.S. Treasury yields has pressured currencies and bonds in emerging markets.

Among Americans, naming a baby "Kamala" has always been a rarity. But history suggests that will change now that Kamala Harris is poised to become vice president. Only once has "Melania" made the top 1,000 baby name list: in 2017, the year Melania Trump became first lady. "Kunta" — as in Kunta Kinte, the protagonist in the mid-1970s novel and television miniseries "Roots" — was a top 1,000 baby name for boys just once, in 1977. (Recasts, updates yields, adds analysts' comments) Jan 22 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury yields drifted lower on Friday as the market benefited from a risk-off sentiment sparked in part by coronavirus concerns and a bumpy road ahead for President Joe Biden's massive economic rescue package. The benchmark 10-year yield was last down 2 basis points at 1.0872%. The inflation breakeven rate for 10-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) dropped after climbing to 2.182%, its highest level since May 2018, following Thursday's strong auction of $15 billion in the securities. The two-year U.S. Treasury yield, which typically moves in step with interest rate expectations, was unchanged at 0.125%. A closely watched part of the yield curve measuring the gap between yields on two- and 10-year Treasury notes was last down 2 basis points at 96.25 basis points.

The real gained 0.6% to 5.26 against the dollar, with investors eying the start of a vaccination campaign beginning at 5 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Monday, a plan that was initially due to start on Wednesday. Brazil will roll out the only vaccine available from the government - the CoronaVac shot made by China's Sinovac Biotech and imported by the Butantan biomedical center in Sao Paulo. The peso was lower earlier in the session as oil prices weakened on rising coronavirus cases and a slowing pace of vaccinations across the world. The country's central bank last week announced a plan to purchase $12 billion over the next 15 months to replenish and expand its foreign currency reserves. Trading activity remained quiet on Monday, with U.S. stock markets shut for the federal Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Traders awaited U.S. Treasury Secretary nominee Janet Yellen's Senate testimony later in the day for clues on the policies of the incoming Joe Biden government and its implications for the U.S. dollar. Yellen is expected to affirm the United States' commitment to market-set currency rates when she testifies on Capitol Hill, the Wall Street Journal reported. Asian currencies have struggled to gain ground this month as Biden's plans for a $1.9 trillion stimulus package has fuelled a rise in U.S. treasury yields and in turn lifted the dollar. South Korea's benchmark KOSPI jumped about 3% after suffering its worst fall in nearly three months in the previous session, fuelled by gains in shares of automaker Hyundai Motor and its affiliates. Adding to the positive mood, South Korea's vice finance minister also said additional measures will soon be unveiled to revitalise consumption.
